Women's Soccer Fall in Season Opener

Women's Soccer Fall in Season Opener

The Suffolk University Women's Soccer team fell 1-0 in their season opener to the Lesley University Lynx on Friday evening.

It took nearly 109 minutes for the game to be decided, until senior Veronica Halen (San Diego, Calif.) scored the game's lone goal as her free kick from 25 yards out provided the game winner for the Lynx.

Junior Melissa Brouillette (Shelton, Conn.) made six saves in goal for the Rams.

Suffolk came out quick offensively in the first half as they were able to put out two shots on the goal in the opening two minutes that were both stopped by sophomore Jackie Berard (Coventry, R.I.).

Junior Hannah Landerholm (Edmonds, Wash.) would have a couple of scoring opportunities for the Lynx in the final twenty one minutes of regulation but neither could get by Brouillette.

Lesley would maintain control in the first overtime period as they had three shots as a time, including one off the crossbar by freshman Morgan Zack (Bellevue, Wash.). Brouillette would make two more saves later in the period to continue the game.

Senior Gabrielle Balestrier (Mohnton, Pa.) had a chance for Suffolk to win the contest in the game's 102nd minute but her shot was stopped by junior Emileigh Llyod (Middletown, Pa.) who started the second half in goal for Lesley.

The victory was the first for Lesley on the season.

Four different players for Suffolk registered shots on goal in the contest.

The Rams will be back in action on Saturday afternoon as they travel to Gordon College for a non-conference matchup beginning at noon.
