The Suffolk University Women's Soccer team won a 2-1 overtime decision over the Mount Ida College Mustangs in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Women's Soccer action on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Lauren Spencer (Tewksbury, Mass.) put home the game-winning goal three minutes into the overtime period on a center pass from junior Gabrielle Balestrier (Mohnton, Pa.) as the Rams draw even in league play with a 4-4 record, and move to 4-8 overall on the season.
The goal was Spencer's first goal of the 2012 season and first career game winning goal.
The game needed an extra period as both teams played through a scoreless second half after trading first half goals.
Junior Monica Wolf (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) got the Rams on the board first as she also scored her first goal of the season on an unassisted play twenty five minutes into the contest.
The Mustangs would draw even at one goal each however in the game's forty-first minute as freshman Maegan Hernberg (Eastford, Conn.) struck on her first career collegiate goal.
Both teams had chances late in the second half to clinch a victory, but each would make strong defensive stands.
Junior Briana Tomaselli (Warwick, R.I.) was one-on-one with a breakaway with ninety seconds remaining but Suffolk sophomore goalkeeper Melissa Brouilette (Shelton, Conn.) came out to play the ball and stop the Mustangs' scoring chance.
Suffolk would force the ball upfield thirty seconds later as Balestrier worked her way through the defense deep in the zone and had a wide open shot stopped by a Mustangs' defender keeping the ball out of the goal.
Brouillette made seven saves in the victory for the Rams, while freshman Samantha Basler (Plymouth, Mass.) stopped nine shots in goal for the Mustangs.
Mount Ida held a slight advantage in shots in the contest at 18-14.
Both teams will be back in GNAC action on this Monday's holiday as Mount Ida travels to St. Joseph's College for a 1:00pm matchup with the Monks, while the Rams head to Albertus Magnus to take on the Falcons.
