Women's Soccer Tops JWU 1-0 in Playoff Opener

The Suffolk University Women's Soccer team topped the Johnson & Wales University Wildcats in the opening round of the 2011 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament, 1-0.

Senior Leslie Hayden (Ross, Calif.) scored the game's lone goal in the thirty-ninth minute on a breakaway as Suffolk advances to Tuesday's semifinals. The Rams will take on the winner of Monday's matchup between Albertus Magnus College and Simmons College that was postponed due to the Nor'easter that swept through the New England region over the weekend.

Hayden's goal also moved her to the top of the All-Time Scoring List in GNAC history as the senior forward registered her 173rd career point, moving her past former Wildcat Patrice Merendina's (1999-2002) total of 171.

In 2011, Hayden has now registed 48 points, a new program record, while her 21 goals ties the Suffolk mark and is a career-high. Her goals and points totals are both tops this season among GNAC scorers, while she also ranks among the top ten among all NCAA Division-III Women's Soccer players in both categories as well.

Freshman goalkeeper Melissa Brouillette (Shelton, Conn.) stopped all 12 shots she faced in the contest to collect her eighth shutout of the season, a new Suffolk single season program mark.

Brouillette was busy in the second half as she had to make 10 saves to preserve the Suffolk victory, their eighth in ten games. Over that span opponents have only scored on Brouillette three times.

The Wildcats were busy in the second half as they held a 14-1 edge in shots during the half and had a 20-5 advantage in the game.

The win moves the Rams to a 10-7-1 overall record on the season.
