Balestrier, Brouillette Extend Women's Soccer Unbeaten Streak to Seven Games

The Suffolk University Women's Soccer team extended their unbeaten streak to seven games as they topped the Rivier College Raiders 3-0 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Thursday evening.

Freshman Melissa Brouillette (Shelton, Conn.) posted her sixth consecutive shutout and extended her scoreless minutes streak to 587 minutes as she stopped four shots in the contest for the Rams.

With the win Suffolk now improves to 6-5-1 in GNAC games on the season while improving their overall mark to 8-6-1. The loss drops Rivier College to 4-7 in GNAC play and 6-9-1 on the year.

Brouillette had one scare in the game as sophomore Lauren Tampossi (Hollis, N.H.) was able to break through the Suffolk defense eight minutes into the second half going one on one with the Rams goalkeeper. Brouillette won the battle diving to her right to stop Tampossi's shot as the Rams controlled the majority of the offensive tempo throughout the contest.

Sophomore Gabrielle Balestrier (Mohnton, Pa.) led the offensive charge as she posted a four point night as she scored a goal and added assists on both of the Rams other goals.

Suffolk got on the board first just five minutes into the contest as senior Lauren Cameron (Kingston, Jamaica) scored her seventh goal of the season. Cameron took a feed in front of the net from Balestrier for the early score.

Senior Leslie Hayden (Ross, Calif.) added two assists in the game. Hayden had a hand in Cameron's goal as her individual effort kept the ball in the Raiders zone before she found Balestrier on the other side of the field to set up the first Suffolk score.

The Balestrier-Hayden combo would strike again in the game's sixty first minute as the sophomore forward took a cross pass from Hayden and put home her third goal of the season.

Sophomore Meghan McHale (Halifax, Mass.) would score later in the contest as she headed in a corner kick by Balestrier for her sixth goal of the 2011 season.

Both teams will be in GNAC action on Saturday with Rivier travelling to Norwich University for a noon showdown with the cadets. Suffolk will travel across town to take on the Emerson College Lions as both teams look to make headway in the GNAC Tournament coming later in the month.
