Women's Soccer Sweep GNAC Awards

The Suffolk University Women's Soccer team swept the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Yearly awards for 2010 as the Rams finished with a league best 10-2 record in GNAC play, and posted with a 13-3-1 overall record. The Rams who currently have the nation's eighth ranked offense scoring 3.94 goals per game had six players named to the league's all-star team, including the Offensive Player of the year and league's Rookie of the Year.

Freshman Taylor Miranda (Smithtow, N.Y.) was named GNAC Offensive Player of the Year, as well as being named a first team All-Conference selection at forward. Miranda currently ranked 12th among all NCAA Division-III Women's Soccer players with a 2.88 points per game average. Miranda's 46 points is currently 19th in the nation, while her 21 goals ranks 14th in the nation. Miranda is first in both categories among all GNAC players. This season Miranda scored 17 goals in GNAC contests, a new league record. Her 21 goals in a season is also a new program record. In 16 games played this season, Miranda had eight multiple goal games, including two hat tricks. Miranda was GNAC Rookie of the Week twice this season (September 20 and 27) and was named to the GNAC Weekly Honor Roll once on October 5.

Freshman Gabrielle Balestrier (Mohnton, Penn.) was named GNAC Rookie of the Year, as well as being named a first team All-Conference selection at forward. Balestrier finished the season second on the team in goals with 15, and third in points with 43. Her 2.69 points per game is currently ranked 18th among all NCAA Division-III Women's Soccer players, while her 13 assists this season is eighth in the country. Balestrier is ranked second in the GNAC with 43 points, while her 2.69 points per game is also ranked second trailing teammate Miranda. Balestrier brought in plenty of awards this season, including being named New England Division-III Player of the Week by the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) on September 20. That week Balestrier recorded her first of two hat tricks this season, with her first coming in a 6-2 victory over Emmanuel College on September 18. Balestrier also earned GNAC Player of the Week honors that week and has been named GNAC Rookie of the Week on October 11.

Freshman midfielder Monica Wolf (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) also earned first team All-Conference honors. Wolf finished the year fourth in points for the Rams with 21, and fourth in goals with seven. Wolf had three multiple goal games this season, with her biggest game coming in a 6-2 victory over St. Joseph's College (Me.) on September 22. Wolf that day scored two goals and two assists to lead the Rams to victory.

Not to be overshadowed was junior Leslie Hayden (Ross, Calif.), who was a second team All-Conference selection as a forward. Hayden had perhaps the biggest impact on the success of the team as she was asked to move from her customary forward position to outside midfielder after the team's third game. The Rams went 12-2 after the transition and the Suffolk offense benefitted as they outscored their opponents 63-15 in the span. Hayden finishes the season with 14 goals and 17 assists for a total of 45 points. Hayden currently ranked 2nd among all NCAA Division-III Women's Soccer Players with 17 assists on the year, and is 20th in the nation with 2.65 points per game. Hayden set the GNAC record this year for assists in conference matches with 14. She also tallied her 50th career goal on October 25 in a 5-0 victory over Mass. Maritime Academy. It was just Hayden's 45th career game played. The 2008 GNAC Rookie of the Year has already put her name in the conference record books. The 50 goals tie Hayden for eighth all-time in GNAC history (she scored her 51st in the Rams 3-1 loss to Emmanuel in the GNAC Quarterfinals), while her 1.11 goals per game average is fourth-best in league history. In her three-year career Hayden now posts 125 total points (51 goals, 23 assists), which currently ranks her ninth all-time in GNAC history, while her 2.73 points per game in second most in GNAC history.

The Rams also had a pair of freshmen earn third team All-Conference as Meghan McHale (Halifax, Mass.) was selected as a midfielder and Nicole Carpenter (Woburn, Mass.) was selected as a defender.

McHale finished the season with one goal and 11 assists. She was also fifth on the team in shots with 48. McHale's 11 assists rank her 22nd among all NCAA Division-III Women's Soccer players. Her 11 assists are third most in the league. The strong leg of McHale helped set up much of the Rams offense as she had three games this season that saw her tally multiple assists.

Carpenter finished the season with two goals and one assist for a total of five points. Both of Carpenter's goals however were game winners. Her first came in Suffolk's 5-2 win over Simmons on September 15 and the other coming in a Suffolk rout over Newbury on October 13.

The Rams made their first appearance in the conference playoffs this season in the program's four-year history under Head Coach Ernst Cleophat. The Rams lost to a veteran savvy Emmanuel College in the GNAC Quarterfinals, 3-1. Suffolk will now hope for a bid into the ECAC New England Tournament. The eight-team field will be announced on Monday, November 8 at 5:00pm as the tournament will open the following Wednesday.
