UMass Boston Spoils Women’s Hockey Home Opener

EAST BOSTON – Suffolk women's soccer slipped to UMass Boston in its home opener, 2-1, Saturday at Louis E. Porrazzo Memorial Skating Rink. The teams traded goals in the first frame before the Beacons put the Beantown battle away in the third period.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Katie Wilbert scored UMB's first goal of the year on a rebound as she picked up the pieces from Emma Webster's shot that hit Madison Ricardo and fell in front of the Beacon. Wilbert quickly put back the rebound to catch Lily O'Neil off guard and it worked to open the scoring 6:46 into the action.  

The one-goal gap did not stay long as Shana Cote responded for the Rams 1:02 later. With things tied up in the corner, Livia Brehm pushed the puck to Sofia Scilipoti, who skated away from the pack behind the Beacons cage. Cote waited in front of the net and Scilipoti found the graduate waiting for the game-tying one-timer.  

Suffolk aimed to erase the leveled the playing field. The Rams controlled the pace of the puck over the second set of 20 minutes. The host saw multiple chances, in fact, two blue-and-gold goals were waved off and Victoria Kennedy denied the other 13 she saw to keep things level at the second intermission.  

UMass Boston broke the tie 8:05 into the final period as Hannah MacDougall took O'Neil five hole to push the visitors in front, 2-1. Wilbert and Cailey Koziah aided on the goal. 

The Rams found themselves having to play catch up and time was not in their favor. Head coach Taylor Wasylk look to give the blue-and-gold and extra boost as she pulled O'Neil from her post from between the pipes. Even with the extra skater Kennedy did her job to preserve the victory for the Beacons.  

NETMINDER NOTES

  • O'Neil logged 17 saves in the setback. 
  • Kennedy record 30 saves in the victory.  

STATISTIACLLY SPEAKING

  • Cote was responsible for the Rams lone goal. 
  • Brehm and Scilipoti notched one assist apiece. 
  • Suffolk outshot UMass Boston, 31-19. 
  • The Rams could not capitalize on their four man-up chances, however, they did skate off their one penalty kill to remain perfect on the PK this season. 
  • Suffolk won the faceoff battle, 38-20.  

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk moved to 3-3-1 all-time against its Beantown rival UMass Boston. 
  • The last two games between the Rams and Beacons have been decided by a one-goal margin. Overall, four games between Suffolk and UMB are one-goal games. 
  • Cote, Brehm and Scilipoti recorded points in each of Suffolk's games this season. 
  • Cote ran her point streak to 10 games. In that stretch she has 16 points on nine goals and seven assists.

SUFFOLK'S SCHEDULE
The Rams will lift the lid on its Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) calendar next weekend, Nov. 4-5, with a home-and-home series with Salve Regina. Suffolk will first visit the Seahawks Friday, before hosting SRU Saturday.
