Women’s Basketball Takes Down NEC in Season Debut, 68-48

WATERVILLE, Maine – Suffolk women's basketball ran past New England College, 68-48, at the Terriers Tip-Off Classic at Larry Mahaney Gymnasium to get its 2024-25 season underway.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rams ran out to a 12-2 lead in the first 4:39 of action and turned that into a 20-14 comfortable cushion after the first 10 minutes.  

The playing field evened out in the second quarter, but thanks to its hot start, Suffolk took a 39-30 advantage into the locker room. 

Offense on both sides was limited in the third quarter. Suffolk outscored NEC, 11-9, though to remain in front, 50-39, as the game headed to the fourth.  

The Rams scoring unit doubled the Pilgrims offensive production in the final frame, 18-9, to lock up the season-opening win. 

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Amanda DeAngelis contributed on both sides of the ball with a 15-point, 10-reobund double-double with two steals and one block. 
  • Colby Guinta provided 17 points on a 7-for-11 connection rate that included a 2-for-3 effort from downtown. The junior added four caroms, two helpers and two takeaways. 
  • Allison Bono rounded out the Rams trio in double figures with 10 points behind a 5-for-11 showing from the floor. The sophomore chipped in five boards, five dimes and two steals. 
  • Jordan Moreau notched eight points, six rebounds, one assist and one steal. 
  • Aisling Crowley contributed seven points, eight caroms and one swat off the bench. 
  • Suffolk shot 42.9 percent (27-63) from the floor, 33.3 percent (6-18) from behind-the-arc and 47.1 percent (8-17) from the line. 
  • The Pilgrims outrebounded the Rams, 45-42. 
  • Suffolk capitalized on NEC's 20 turnovers and turned them into 19 points. 
  • The Pilgrims converted their 18 offensive rebounds into 15 points.  

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk moved to 23-19 all-time in season openers and 19-12 under head coach Ed Leyden
  • The Rams have coupled back-to-back season-opening wins together. It is the first time Suffolk has started to straight seasons with victories since winning three in a row from 2019-21. 
  • Suffolk played on neutral hardwood in game one for the first time since 2015-16 when it played Maine Farmington at the Emerson Tip-Off Tournament. 
  • The Rams moved to 9-7 in game one at a neutral site. 
  • Suffolk met New England College for the first time. 
  • DeAngelis had her first double-double of the season, 36th of her collegiate career. 
  • Bono tied a career-high in field goals made with five. 
  • Isabella Fiorillo and Khaya Skene made their collegiate debuts.
