Women’s Basketball Tops Roger Williams, 73-66

BRISTOL, R.I. – A 15-0 Rams run in the third quarter proved to be the difference in a down-to-the-wire Commonwealth Coast Conference contest where Suffolk women's basketball defeated Roger Williams, 73-66, Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
It was a back-and-forth affair from the get-go with four lead changes in the first quarter with Roger Williams up one, 12-11, at the end of the first 10 minutes.  

The lead flipped flopped four more times in the second stanza to send Suffolk into the break down 39-34. 

The Rams found themselves down 11, 47-36, with 7:04 left on the clock in the third. A triple by Jordan Moreau ignited 15 straight points from Suffolk that sent the blue-and-gold in front, 51-47. The blue-and-gold maintained that four-point margin, 55-51, as the game transitioned to the fourth frame.  

The Hawks put away seven straight points to fly ahead, 58-55, in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter. Colby Guinta sunk a trey at the 4:09 mark to level the playing field at 60 before. 

Things evened at 62, before Aisling Crowley's jumper was followed by back-to-back buckets from Guinta, one inside the arc and one outside pushed the Rams advantage to 69-62 with 1:18 to go. 

Suffolk sealed the victory at the line as it went 4-for-6 from the charity stripe over the final minute.  

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Lauren Romito led four Rams in double figures with 18 points on a 6-for-9 effort from the floor with a 5-for-6 showing from the line. She grabbed eight boards and swatted five shots. 
  • Guinta finished with 14 points. She shot 4-for-5 from 3-point land. In addition to her scoring, she supplied five helpers to the Rams offense to go along with one rebound and one steal. 
  • Moreau tallied 13 points on a 3-for-4 showing that included a 2-for-3 performance from downtown and a 5-for-7 effort at the foul line. She added a pair of assists and caroms, respectively. 
  • Amanda DeAngelis rounded out the Rams in double figures with 10 points. She also chipped in eight boards and one takeaway. 
  • Crowley chipped in seven caroms, three assists, three blocks and two points off the bench.
  • Roger Williams converted Suffolk's 19 turnovers into 21 points. 

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk snapped a five-game skid against Roger Williams. 
  • The blue-and-gold defeated the Hawks for the first time since Nov. 25, 2014. 
  • The Rams are 10-9 all-time versus the Hawks. 
  • Suffolk is 7-3 when playing at Roger Williams. 
  • Under Ed Leyden's guidance, the blue-and-gold is 9-8 versus the Hawks.
