Women’s Basketball Gets by Curry, 58-51

MILTON, Mass. – Suffolk women's basketball allowed Curry to keep things interesting as the Colonels took their first lead of the night late in the fourth quarter before the Rams came back to capture the Commonwealth Coast Conference contest, 58-51, Tuesday night at Katz Gymnasium.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 58 | Curry 51
RECORDS: Suffolk (9-2, 3-1 CCC) | Curry (4-6, 0-3 CCC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Suffolk controlled the pace of play in the first five minutes of the opening quarter to take a 9-0 early edge that grew to double figures, 14-4. The Colonels caught up with a quarter-ending 6-0 spurt to make it a four-point gap, 14-10, after the first 10 minutes.

Once again, the Rams pulled in front by double figures with an 11-point advantage, 26-15, with 2:19 remaining before halftime. In a case of déjà vu, Curry strung together a 6-2 run to end the quarter and cut the deficit to seven, 28-21, at the break.

Downtown shooting from Madi Mahoney helped Suffolk take its largest lead of the night, a 13-point cushion, 41-28, with 4:27 on the clock in the third. The Rams would not score the rest of the stanza, while the Colonels buried three freebies to pull back within 10, 41-31.

Curry's momentum carried into the fourth and scored six straight points to slice down the margin to four, 41-37, just over one minute into the final frame of regulation.

The Colonels did not stop there as they tied the playing field at 44-all, before Sophie HIlbrunner hit the front end of a two-shot trip the charity stripe to send the host in for the first time on the night, 45-44.

Trailing was short lived for the Rams as Akiyah Brown converted a pass from Amanda DeAngelis into two points that sent Suffolk ahead once again. Jordan Moreau went on to turn a Colonels turnover into a traditional 3-point play to pad the Rams lead.

Fans were kept on the edge of their sets until the very end. After nearly three scoreless minutes Kasey Reeves cut the gap down to two with 2:00 minutes left in regulation. Moreau responded for the Rams with a layup of her own to restore the four-point distance.

Suffolk sealed the victory at the charity stripe as the visitors went 7-for-8 at the line over the final 46 seconds to capture the 58-51 win.
