Rams Record Broken: DiCecco Grabs Women’s Basketball Scoring Title

BOSTON – Suffolk women's basketball's record book got jumbled up Friday, Dec. 10 when Jenni-Rose DiCecco rewrote the program's all-time scoring record.

DiCecco headed into Friday's tilt against Fisher, the Rams last before the first semester break, even with Katie Norton '00 for a share of the blue-and-gold's all-time scoring title with 1,516 career points.

It may have taken the entire first frame against the Falcons to become the Rams' new No. 1 scorer in the history of the Suffolk women's basketball program, but the feat was still achieved.

With 29 seconds left on the clock in the opening quarter, DiCecco did what she has done hundreds of times before, bank in a left-handed layup in transition. This hoop wasn't special because it gave the Rams the go-ahead momentum in the game, as the hosts easily jumped ahead early on against the Falcons, but it made DiCecco the Rams' all-time leading scorer in the Rams', passing Norton's total that stood for over 20 years.

The graduate student finished the 76-43 victory over Fisher with a team-high 17 points to go along with six rebounds, six assists and four steals, which helped Suffolk to a 7-3 record at the mid-year break.

DiCecco entered her fifth year at Suffolk fifth on the Rams all-time scoring list with 1,385 points scattered over 90 games. This season she has led Suffolk's scoring attack with 14.8 points per outing to move up the ranks and take sole possession of the scoring title 10 games into her fifth year.

The milestone moment was achieved in her 100th collegiate contest, which is also a large feat for a Ram. She is just the 20th player in the program's 39-year history to lace up her sneakers in 100-plus games. Norton did not even do that as she took the hardwood just 98 times in a Suffolk jersey.

DiCecco proved to have a legendary career from the get-go as she collected Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Rookie of the Year status as a freshman. First-team all-accolades as a sophomore and became one of the fastest and youngest members of Suffolk's 1,000-point club as a junior. On Dec. 4, 2019, almost two years to do the day of her rewriting the blue-and-gold's scoring mark, she became the 15th Ram to net the grand marker in their collegiate careers and achieved the feat in just her 62nd collegiate contest.

Not only is DiCecco a scoring sensation, currently the fifth active leader in NCAA Division III basketball with 1,533 career points, but has shown a knack for setting up the offensive attack and playing the passing lanes. For that, she holds both Suffolk's all-time assists and steals records.

Today, her 456 career assists sit second among active NCAA DIII players, while her 262 steals are good for third.

DiCecco's game goes above offensive output and playing the passing lanes though and the 5-foot-6 guard has proved it with 543 rebounds. That marks makes her just the 11th Ram in program history to register over 1,000 points and 500 boards in their careers. She is the first to reach that milestone since Georgia Bourikas '18 did so in Feb. 10, 2018.

Furthermore, DiCecco is the second-ever Ram to reach the career milestones of 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 300 assists triple milestone behind Jacqueline Vienneau '13, who reached the feat Feb. 5, 2013.

DiCecco and the Rams are on a break for finals and the holidays and will be back in action Tuesday, Jan. 4 when they entertain Nichols in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) clash at 5:30 p.m. at Larry E. and Michael S. Smith Court
