Women’s Basketball Pounces Plymouth State, 72-61

BOSTON – Suffolk women's basketball did what no team has done before, defeat Plymouth State, as three Rams in double figures paced a 72-61 victory over the Panthers Saturday afternoon at the Larry E. and Michael S. Smith Court.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Three different Rams scored to give the Rams an early 7-0 edge that turned into a 19-8 lead at the 3:39 minute mark when Allie Lopes buried her first bucket of the day behind-the-arc. Four quick points chipped the deficit down to single digits, but Alexis Hackett knocked down a triple to end the first 10 minutes, which regained a double-digit distance for the blue-and-gold, 22-12.  

Suffolk continued to build a comfortable cushion and maintained the double figure margin through the second set of 10 minutes to take a 37-26 lead into the locker rooms. 

The teams traded hoops for the majority of the third frame before the Panthers scored five straight points to pull within 45-37. A traditional three-point play by Lopes regained a double figure advantage that extended back to14 when Jenni-Rose DiCecco sunk a trey at the end of the quarter.  

Plymouth State put on the pressure in the fourth, but the Rams held onto their composure and took their largest lead two minute into the final frame, 57-39.  

Down the stretch a battle of freebies. Sharp shooting at the charity stripe secured the victory for the blue-and-gold.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • DiCecco led the way with 27 points behind an 8-fo-14 showing from the field, which including a 4-for-7 connection rate from downtown. The floor general handout out eight helpers and had four takeaways. 
  • Hackett filled up the stat sheet with an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double. The senior was responsible for all of Suffolk's five swats and picked up five steals as well. 
  • Lopes registered 15 points and four caroms in a reserve effort. 
  • Jordan Hipwell chipped in 10 rebounds, five points, two steals and one assist. 
  • Emily Welling contributed on both sides of the ball as well with eight caroms and four points.

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk and Plymouth State met for the fourth time, first since 1987. 
  • The Rams defeated the Panthers for the first time in the all-time series to move to 1-3 against PSU. 
  • Suffolk scored the most points in program history against Plymouth State, surpassing its previously set mark of 57, which was set in 1984-85, in the first-ever meeting. 
  • Hackett produced her 27th career double-double, second of the season. 
  • Hackett had a career-high five steals. 
  • Lopes set a new personal-best in free throws made with five.
