BOSTON – The Suffolk volleyball team is set for its 2018 season opener this weekend as the Rams compete at the MIT Invitational. Match one sends the blue-and-gold to Wellesley Friday, Sept. 7 for a 7 p.m. first serve with the second day of competition taking place on MIT's campus at the Rockwell Cage. Suffolk opens Saturday, Sept. 8 at 10 a.m. versus Morrisville State and wraps up action in the afternoon against Colby at 2 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT
Whatever head coach Ed Leyden said in the locker room in half time worked, as the Suffolk women's basketball team handled Salve Regina in the third quarter to take an 81-65 non-conference victory over the Seahawks Wednesday night at Regan Gymnasium.

RAMS RUNDOWN
Since slipping in the season opener, Suffolk has coupled back-to-back wins to head into the weekend 2-1. 

The Rams' 69.0 ppg offense sees three student-athletes average double digits led by Jenni-Rose DiCecco's 16.0 ppg. Alexis Hackett falls in a close second with 15.7 ppg with Gabriella DeComo rounding out the threesome with 11.0 ppg. Marissa Gudauskas has also proved to be a consistent offensive contributor with 9.0 ppg.

Hackett and DiCecco are the main factors on the defensive end as well. Hackett paces Suffolk's 38.3 rpg with 10.0 rpg of her own with DiCecco grabbing 6.3 rpg. Freshman Emily Welling adds 5.0 rpg to the effort. 

GET TO KNOW THE GULLS
Endicott (0-1) lifted the lid on its season with a 66-57 setback to MIT Nov. 11 to head into the tournament looking for its first victory of the season. 

Emily Pratt poured in 23 points and pulled down nine boards to lead the way for the Gulls in game one. Lexi Gellerman helped on both ends of the hardwood with eight points and caroms, respectively, with Kaleigh Putnam pitching in 11 points. 

INSIDE THE SERIES

  • Suffolk and Endicott will meet for the 15th time Saturday afternoon and first since 2014.
  • The Rams trail the all-time series with the Gulls, 9-15.
  • Suffolk fell to Endicott, 50-38, in the last meeting Jan. 23, 2014.
  • The Rams last victory over the Gulls came in overtime Feb. 23, 2013, 50-48.

EYES ON THE GAME
 

BEARS BREAKDOWN
Pending day one's outcomes, Suffolk may meet Coast Guard on day two. The Bears head into the tournament, which they open up against UMass Dartmouth on Saturday, 1-1 on the year. 

Micaela Martinelli and Kyra Hartman provided 15.0 ppg and 10.0 ppg, respectively, to a Coast Guard offense that averages 62.0 ppg. Johanna Moolenaar (9.5 ppg) and Zoe Riis-Fallica (8.0 ppg) add to the effort as well.

Martinelli is the leader for the Bears on the board as well with the senior guard grabbing 8.5 rpg. Breanna Wood chips in 8.0 rpg to Coast Guard's 45.5 rpg effort.

INSIDE THE SERIES

  • If Suffolk meets Coast Guard Sunday, it will be the first contest for the foes since the 1999-00 season.
  • In a series, which dates back to 1987-88, the Rams trail the Bears, 3-8.
  • Suffolk picked up the last meeting, defeating Coast Guard, 61-50. 

EYES ON THE GAME

CORSAIRS CATCH UP
UMass Dartmouth, the Lafrance Hospitality Classic host, gets the weekend action going Saturday against Coast Guard. The Corsairs opened their season with a 79-65 victory over Bridgewater State Tuesday night. 

Five different Corsairs chipped in double digits in game one. Jess Korzec's 19 points led the way followed by Nakira Examond's 17. Kayla McMahon recorded 12 points with Ashley Brown and Shaelyn Carreiro each producing 10.

Brown put together a double-double effort in the season debut with an impressive 15 rebounds to go with her offensive output. Examond was also on the cusps of a double-double with nine caroms to her credit.

INSIDE THE SERIES

  • Suffolk and UMass Dartmouth have met just once in the Rams' 35-year history on Nov. 16, 2008. The Rams own the decision in convincing fashion, 90-35.
