Women’s Basketball GNAC Corvias Rookie of the Week Streak Continues; Rourke Honored

BOSTON – For the seventh straight week the GNAC Corvias Rookie of the Week hails from Suffolk women's basketball as Katelyn Rourke picked up the honor thanks to a 7.3 ppg and 9.0 rpg in a 3-0 week for the Rams, the league office announced Monday afternoon.

Rourke and the Rams continued to roll in 2017, collecting consecutive wins numbers six, seven and eight as the blue-and-gold came back at Norwich, 68-63, before rolling by Rivier, 85-53, and Mt. Ida, 72-51. Now the winners of eight straight, the longest win streak since matching that number in Jan. 17 – Feb. 5, 2011 and the best start to second semester since rattling off 11 wins in a row to open the second semester in 2000-01, Suffolk sits at 13-5 on the season and 8-1 against conference competition.

Suffolk and the freshman started off the week slowly, using a second-half surge in Northfield, Vermont to take down the Cadets. Similar to the majority of her Suffolk counterparts Rourke struggled offensively finishing the MLK Day contest with just four points, but led defensively, grabbing 10 boards including eight on the defensive end to go along with two blocks, and one steal.

In the trouncing over Rivier, the 5-foot-10 forward was two points shy once again stood tall on the glass with 11 rebounds and was just two points shy of a double-double effort with eight points off a perfect 4-for-4 showing at the charity stripe. She contributed three swats, one steal and one handout to her statline.

The Rams and Watertown, Massachusetts local capped off the 3-0 week with a nine-point, six-rebound reserve performance in a convincing win at Mt. Ida. She shot 3-for-6 from the field and went 3-for-4 on freebies to help keep Suffolk's streak alive.

The honor marks the second for Rourke this season with classmate Alexis Hackett owning five of the league's best rookie of a seven day stretch nods. Overall, Suffolk was taken home all but one of the conference's rookie weekly (8) accolades this season.

Suffolk's winning ways will be contested on Thursday, Jan. 26 when Rourke and the Rams head to Providence, Rhode Island for a 7 p.m. showdown at Johnson & Wales. In the team's first meeting this season, Alexandra Clarke put in a lay-up off an out-of-bounds feed from Alexandra Nagri to lift the blue-and-gold to a thrilling 61-60 win over the Wildcats Dec. 7.
