Women’s Basketball Rolls Past St. Joseph (Conn.) 66-45

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The Suffolk women's basketball team knocked off its second straight opponent as the Rams took down St. Joseph (Conn.), 66-45, Sunday afternoon inside Brunelli Court.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Blue Jays put away the first points of the contest before four different Rams combined for 11 straight points including five from Alexandra Nagri. St. Joseph's took a timeout to break up the run and did so with a bucket from behind the arc, but Suffolk did not lose its momentum as it went on an 8-0 stretch to take a 19-5 lead. After three points from the hosts Kelsey Schiebel added four point from the blue and gold to give the visitors a 23-8 cushion after the first 10 minutes. 
 

Schiebel continued to have a day into the second stanza as the senior guard registered 12 points over the first 13 minutes of action to make it a 31-10 Suffolk game. Out of St. Joseph's second timeout of the day, the Blue Jays made a run with nine unanswered points, but Schiebel struck again to maintain a 15-point difference, 40-25.  

Thanks to a 10-1 stretch to end the second quarter, Suffolk took a 53-30 advantage into halftime.  

Out of the break St. Joseph played Suffolk evenly with the visitors outscoring the hosts by just two points in the third quarter and tying in the fourth. The damage had already been done and the Rams held on for the 66-45 victory. 

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Schiebel finished the day with a team-high 15 points shooting 50 percent (5-10) from the floor and going 4-of-7 from three-point range to go along with six boards and three assists. 
  • Nagri joined Schiebel with double digits with 10 points, going 4-for-7 from the field and a perfect 2-for-2 from behind the arc. 
  • Clark led Suffolk on the boards pulling down eight. The senior forward added nine points, three blocks and two assists to her stat line. 
  • Suffolk shot 44.6 percent (25-56) from the field and an incredible 50 percent from behind-the-arc. The Rams struggled on freebies though, going just 9-for-20 (45%). 
  • The blue-and-gold out rebounded the BlueJays, 51-34.  

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk won its 11th consecutive against St. Joseph's to improve to 18-2 in the all-time series back to 1997. 
  • Schiebel led Suffolk's offense for the second straight game 
  • Talia Riccoli scored a career-high five points.
