Third Quarter Sends Colby Sawyer Past Women’s Basketball, 75-57

NEW LONDON, N.H. – After a neck-and-neck first-half, Colby Sawyer outscored the Suffolk women's basketball team 27-12 in the third quarter and went on to defeat the Rams, 75-57, Tuesday night at the Dan & Kathleen Hogan Sports Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Suffolk opened up the scoring thanks to a good triple from Georgia Bourikas. The Rams went up 7-2, before the Chargers came back with an 11-1 to take a 13-8 lead. After coach Ed Leyden talked things over with Suffolk, the Rams charged back with a 10-2 run of its own to retake the edge, 18-15. Colby Sawyer put in a good freebie to end the first frame and make it a two-point game, 18-16. 
 

The Chargers leveled the game on the first possession of the second stanza, before Suffolk went ahead, 27-21, on a good layup by Alexandra Clarke. The Rams maintained a four-point edge thanks to Caitlyn Caramello putting away her first hoop of the evening, but Colby Sawyer came back and tied things at 29-all. The hosts took a 31-29 lead and things turned into a a see-saw affair to end the half with Suffolk down, 35-34.  

Colby Sawyer recharged its batteries during halftime and ran out to a quick double-digit lead, 44-34, at 7:10 in the third quarter. The Chargers did not falter from there, taking its largest lead of the night (20), 72-52, with 3:26 remaining, and kept the Rams at a distance from there to claim a 75-57 victory. 

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Clarke had a career-day as the senior poured in 18 points, shooting 8-for-11 from the floor and grabbed seven rebounds. The lone Ram in double figures added one assist, one block and one steal to her impressive stat line.  
  • Caramello contributed nine points, six boards and one handout off the bench. 
  • Bourikas pitched in seven points and seven caroms. 
  • Suffolk shot 30.6 (22-72) percent from the floor, compared to Colby Sawyer's 42.6 percent connection rate. The Chargers also excelled from long range, shooting 47.1 percent (8-17) from three-point land, while the Rams struggled from behind the arc, going 3-for-16 (18.8 percent). 
  • Colby Sawyer out rebounded Suffolk, 42-39, held a slim advantage in assists, 19-13, and blocks, 6-3, but both teams tallied six steals apiece.
