STANDISH, Maine - After falling behind by nine before the half, the Suffolk women's basketball team failed to make a comeback as they dropped a 74-58 decision to top-seeded Saint Joseph's (Me.) in the semifinal round of the 2016 GNAC Tournament Thursday night.
The loss brought the Rams' 17-10 season to a close after a fourth place finish in the GNAC during the regular season. Thursday night's effort was led by junior Kelsey Schiebel who fueled the Suffolk offense with a team-high 15 points shooting 60 percent (6-10) from the floor, as well as from behind the arc (3-5), while also adding five rebounds and five assists.
Alexandra Clarke and Georgia Bourikas also finished in double digits pouring in 12 and 11 points, respectively, while Alessandra Quadri led the Rams in rebounds with seven boards.
The game remained within three points until midway through the second quarter when the Monks scored eight unanswered points to go ahead 31-22. Bourikas made two free throws with two minutes to play in the half to pull the Rams within seven, but as St. Joseph's went on to score another six unanswered points into the opening minutes of the third quarter, Suffolk never regained control of the lead.
The Monks were led by Morgan Cahill's 18-point performance with 14 of her point total coming in the second half to put the game away for St. Joseph's. Kelsi McNamara added 14 points in the victory while Emily Benway scored 12 points and brought down six rebounds. They will advance to take on Emmanuel in the GNAC Finals on Saturday.
