Women’s Basketball Falls to UMass, 64-46

BOSTON – In its final non-conference contest of the season, the Suffolk women's basketball team dropped a 64-46 decision to UMass Boston Tuesday night inside Regan Gymnasium.

Despite tonight's setback, Suffolk (11-8) finish its non-conference slate 8-5 overall, its best out of league ledger since the 2012-13 (13-1) season.

Chelsea Campellone was the lone Ram in double figures with 11. Georgia Bourikas pitched in seven points off the bench with Caitlyn Caramello and Kelsey Schiebel putting in six apiece. Alessandra Quadri led Suffolk on the boards with nine and Caramello grabbed six.

UMass Boston (11-9) saw three different players in double figures paced by Grace Geary's 15. Chantel Jordan and Olivia Murphy contributed 10 each.

The first half was a run-and-gun affair and it played in favor of the Beacons. After trading points to open the contest, UMass doubled its lead, 16-8, at the 2:09 minute mark. Schiebel put in two free throws and Bourikas swished a freebie to cut the deficit to five, 16-11, at the end of the first quarter.

Suffolk won the second 10-minute set, 10-8, to head into half-time down by just three, 24-21.

The Rams put together a sluggish shooting performance in the first half, going just 6-of-31 from the floor for a 19.4 connection rate and missed both attempts from long range. Suffolk used a 75 percent (9-12) showing at the foul line to stay in the game. UMass did not shoot much better than the hosts, as the visitors put together a 25.7 percentage (9-35) from the floor and went 2-of-10 from deep.

A 10-2 stretch to start the third quarter put UMass out in front by double figures, 33-23. Suffolk played catch-up from there, but the Beacons rolled out to nearly a 20-point lead and took a 52-33 advantage into the final frame.

The Beacons' 28-point third quarter proved to be the difference as the visitors used the clock to their favor and walked away with a 64-46 triumph.

Suffolk hits the road for the first time in three games as the Rams make the trip to Johnson & Wales Thursday, Feb. 4 for a 7 p.m. GNAC contest.
