Campellone Voted as HERO of the Week of DIII Women’s Basketball

BOSTON – Chelsea Campellone of the Suffolk women's basketball team was named the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Hero of the Week by Hero Sports. Campellone beat out nine other players for the weekly honor, as voted on by fans at HeroSports.com. Campellone received 42 percent of the votes and had more than 160 more votes than the second-place finisher as nearly 1,000 votes nationwide were submitted.

Campellone took home the award on the strength of a 43-point, 13-rebound performance in an 85-63 win over Lasell January 23. After a 20-point first-half, she went onto score five points in the first minute of the third quarter alone and tallied 13 over the final 10 minutes to put in 43 on the afternoon, tying Suffolk University athletics Hall of Famer Ellen Crotty (Pistorino) for second all-time by a Ram in a single game, just two shy of the 40-year program record (45). Campellone went 16-of-22 from the floor and shot 11-of-18 at the line to score more than half of Suffolk's 85 points.

The Fall River, Massachusetts native is the first player in blue-and-gold to surpass 40-plus points during Ed Leyden's tenure, which spans 22 seasons, and is the first Ram to eclipse the mark inside Regan Gymnasium. The 43-point performance currently ranks as the third highest point total by a student-athlete across all of Division III women's basketball this season. She is also the first player in the GNAC to exceed 40 points since 2013-14.

Campellone, who is having a stellar senior season, will now move on for the chance to be named Hero Sports Legend of Year, which looks at all the top weekly performances among NCAA Division III Women's Basketball.

Suffolk and Campellone will return to action Tuesday night as they close their non-conference slate versus UMass Boston inside Regan Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
