Women’s Basketball Clashes at Curry, Falls 82-73

MILTON, Mass. – The Suffolk women's basketball team had its win-streak snapped Tuesday night as the Colonels of Curry took down the Rams, 82-73, in a non-conference clash inside the Dr. Eleanor Meyeroff Katz Gymnasium.

Suffolk had its season-long, three-game win streak halted and moved to 9-5 on the year, while Curry improved to 6-7 with the victory.

The Rams fell in a deep hole early as the Colonels opened the game with 18 unanswered points over the first 2:30. Marissa Gudauskas got the ball rolling for the Rams as the freshman put in a jump shot at 6:09. From there, Suffolk played a game of catch-up and ended the first frame down by eight, 22-14.

Rolls reserved in the second stanza as Suffolk opened the quarter on a 7-0 stretch, which included five points from Georgia Bourikas to pull within one 22-21. Curry talked things over in a timeout, but the Rams continued to fire on all cylinders and a jump shot from Gudauskas gave Suffolk its first lead of the night. Kelsey Schiebel struck from long range to make it a 26-22 game in favor of the Rams with 6:18 on the clock before intermission. The Colonels used freebies to end their shooting lull and a back-and-forth contest ensued. The score would tie twice with the lead flip flopping, but Suffolk held onto a 37-35 edge at the break.

The blue-and-gold led for the majority of the third period with Curry slowly chipping away. Christina Deiorio put the hosts within one, 53-52, before a set from Shannon Griffith at the charity stripe gave the hosts its first lead since the second quarter. Suffolk went back in front, but it was short lived as Alyssa Keeney put Curry out in front for good with a jumper.

Trailing by only four to start the final frame, Suffolk played the comeback game and used a pair of free throws from Chelsea Campellone looked to do just that. Curry had an answer, however, and went on to build a double figure advantage, 73-62, with less than five minutes remaining.

Alessandra Quadri's lay-up at 4:41 brought the deficit to single digits, but that remained for the next 1:59 as neither team was able to put the ball in the basket. As time ticked on, Suffolk had to take the chance with the foul game and the Colonels struck when needed to hold on for the 82-73 triumph.

Bourikas had a stand out day off the bench for the Rams as the junior guard put in a game-high 21 points, shooting 8-of-14 from the floor and 4-of-8 from beyond-the-arc. The guard added seven rebounds and two steals to her stat line. Schiebel registered 12 points for Suffolk, while Campellone pitched in 11 and led the Rams' on the boards with nine.

Four different Colonels contributed double-figures in the winning effort for Curry with Emily Irwin's 19 leading the way. Griffith chipped in 18 points with Nicole Rice and Deiorio adding 17 and 13, respectively. Kerry White was Curry's force on the glass with a game-high 20.

Suffolk returns to the friendly confines of Regan Gymnasium Saturday, Jan. 16 and steps back into GNAC action when it entertains Emmanuel a 1 p.m.
