Softball Fumbles in Game 2 at Roger Williams, 7-3

BRISTOL, R.I. – A five-run fifth inning by the Hawks was the difference maker for Suffolk softball as it fell to Roger Williams, 7-3, in the nightcap of a Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader at Paolino Field Sunday.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 3 | Roger Williams 7
RECORDS: Suffolk (15-19, 5-7 CCC) | Roger Williams (14-14, 4-6 CCC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Suffolk scored twice in the second to jump out to a 2-0 lead. Base hits from Becky ZellinElla Turnbull and Julia Mills loaded the bags. Bella Rocha-Medeiros kept the single rally going and brought in the first Rams run of the afternoon. After a fielder's choice secured the first out of the frame, Lily Gustafson's loud out to center plated Mills to make it a two-run edge.

It took 2.5 innings, but a response by Roger Williams came as the host burst out to a five-run fifth to put Suffolk in a three-run, 5-2 hole.

Zellin answered for the Rams in the top of the sixth with a solo shot to left to trim the deficit down to two.

That gap was short lived as the Hawks poured in two more runs in the home half of the inning to stretch their advantage to 7-3.

Rocha-Medeiros and Delaney Doidge sandwiched base hits around outs to keep the blue-and-gold bats some hope, but a long out by Catherine Carignan ended the inning and the setback fate for Suffolk.
