Emmanuel Tops Softball in Game 1, 5-1

BOSTON – Three unanswered Saints run in the fifth frame sent Emmanuel past Suffolk softball, 5-1, in the opener of a Beantown twinbill Wednesday at Clemente Field.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 1 | Emmanuel 5
RECORDS: Suffolk (11-12) | Emmanuel (8-9)

HOW IT HAPPNED
The Saints scored first in the bottom of the third. Madison Marks led off with a single to center, moved over on Christyna Winstead's ground out to the pitcher. Mia Fernandes took Marks' spot on second and advanced to third on Amanda Penney's productive ground out to the circle. Taylor Chelak brought the first run of the day in on a double to right that put Suffolk in a 1-0 hole.

The Rams made up the ground in the next half inning. Jolie Quintana knocked a base hit to left center, put on her running shoes when Catherine Carignan doubled to center and scored on an error by Emmanuel's center fielder Taylor Chelak to level the playing field at 1-all.

Emmanuel used a Rams error in the home half of the inning to regain the one-run advantage, 2-1.

After a 3-up, 3-down inning by the blue-and-gold, the Saints stretched their advantage to 5-1. Back-to-back walks were followed by a one-run two-bagger off Olivia Conti's bat. Lily Newhall came in to take over for Ashlyn Conley and Sammy Hayes struck a single up the middle that plated a pair of runners for the four-run margin.

Suffolk's offense was unable to get a base runner the rest of the way as Marks did her job in the sixth and MeKayla Poisson retired the side in the seventh.
