Softball Silenced by Simmons in Twinbill Opener, 5-0

NEWTON, Mass. – Suffolk softball saw its four-game win streak come to an end Saturday afternoon as the Sharks of Simmons kept the Rams off the scoreboard, 5-0, in the first outing of a non-conference double feature at Daly Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Suffolk could not figure out Simmons twirler Maddie Castigliego as she limited the Rams to just three base runners over the seven stanzas.  

A Ram did not reach until the third frame and by then they were already down 3-0. Simmons scored twice in the first frame on a two-run double by Shannon McMahon. Two innings later, Jordyn Rubin collected an RBI on a base hit to center. 

The Sharks added another tally in the fourth and one in the top of the seventh. In the fourth, Alex Mulhern singles through the right side with the bases full to bring in the fourth run of the day. Three innings later, a foul sac fly by Rubin pushed the distance to 5-0, which preserved locked up by a three-up, three-down home half of the inning by Castigliego. 

PITCHERS PICTURE

  • Ella Turnbull suffered the setback after allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits and two walks with one strikeint in 6.0 innings. 
  • Julia Newcomb came in for a 1.0 innings of relief for the Rams. She let up one run. 
  • Castigliego finished the afternoon with a three-hit, six-strikeout complete-game shutout.

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk and Simmons renewed a rivalry, meeting for the first time since May 3, 2019.
  • The Rams hosted the Sharks on their home field.  
  • Quintana knocked doubles in back-to-back games. 
  • Diane Rucinski made her collegiate debut with a pinch hit.
