Softball Blanks St. Joseph’s (Maine), 4-0, to Open Series

STANDISH, Maine – The Suffolk softball team shutout St. Joseph's (Maine), 4-0, Saturday afternoon at Bailey Field to open a two-game series Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After three scoreless frames, Suffolk got things going in the fourth. Ashley Zulla drew a walk and sniped second, before an error from the Monks left fielder let the freshman come in. Jill Pulek scored Deviln Frost, who reached on the error, with a double, and the designated hitter came in on a throw after Delaney Sylvester sent a single into the field.

In their next time at the plate, Suffolk rung another around the bases to take a four-run lead. Singles from Morgan Parmeter and Jaclyn Flint followed by a walk by Zulla put all the ducks in the pond. Two batters later, Pulek sent the rock up the middle for the 4-0 cushion.

Down the stretch, the Rams kept the Monks quiet to seal up the victory, their fifth straight. 

STATISTCALLY SPEAKING

  • Pulek had a day at the play as the designated hitter was a perfect 3-for-3 with two doubles, two RBI and one run scored.
  • Zulla went 2-for-2 with one double and two walks, scoring one run.
  • Flint, Parmater and Sylvester all recorded one hit for the Rams with Frost registering one run.

PITCHERS PICTURE

  • Ali Yamakaitis threw a complete-game, four-hit, three-walk, two-strikeout shutout.
  • Kylie McFadden allowed four runs (two earned) on eight hits, striking out four battesr and walking three in 7.0 innings of work.

NOTEWORTHY

  • The Rams extended their win streak to five straight, its longest of the season, and most straight wins for the blue-and-gold since strining nine wins together April 23- May 4, 2016.
  • Suffolk shutout the Monks for the first time since a 2-0 win over SJC April 25, 2014.
  • Yamakaitis dealt her second shutout of the season in her sixth complete game.
