Emmanuel Walks Away with Game 2, 2-1; Softball Splits Series

BOSTON – With the game locked at 1-all Emmanuel got the walk-off win with a an RBI double to right center to defeat the Suffolk softball team, 2-1, in the nightcap of the GNAC doubleheader at Clemente Field Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Emmanuel threatened to open the scoring in the second inning by loading the bases with two outs, but Ali Yamakaitis worked out of the inning to keep a scoreless game through two. 

Suffolk opened the scoring in the third with a two-out run, this time on an RBI single down the right field line by Ashley Zulla to give the Rams a 1-0 advantage. 

In the fourth, the Saints loaded the bases with no outs, but once again Yamakaitis worked her way out of the jam, this time with a strikeout, groundout and fly out to keep the bags full and hold the 1-0 Suffolk lead.

Emmanuel's arm, Jill Kilcoyne, returned the favor in the fifth as Suffolk filled the bases with one out before Kilcoyne worked out of the inning to keep it a one-run game.

The Saints locked the game in the home half of the inning with a two-out solo blaster to centerfield by Sheehan to even the score at 1-1 heading into the sixth.

Following a scoreless sixth, Kilcoyne surrounded a leadoff single by McKenzie McGrath in the seventh, but handled the remaining of the inning to set-up Emmanuel's walk-off destiny. Sydney Rogers represented the winning run after connecting on a one-out single to left and came around to score on an RBI double to right center by Kerry Sendrick to seal the win for the Saints. 

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Suffolk's five hits came off different bats with Zulla, Jaclyn Flint, Lindsay Pagano, Karina Miranda and McGrath all recording one hit apiece.
  • McGrath was responsible for Suffolk's one thanks to being brought in by Zulla.   

PITCHERS PICTURE

  • Yamakaitis fell inside the circle. The junior allowed two runs on six hits with six strikeouts and three walks.
  • Kilcoyne collected the win in a complete-game effort, limiting Suffolk to one run on five hits with six Ks. 

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk and Emmanuel split the two-game series for the second straight season.

Suffolk takes a break from conference competition as it lifts the lid on its home schedule Tuesday, April 11 when Curry stops by East Boston Memorial Park. The doubleheader is scheduled for a 4 p.m. first pitch.
