Softball Takes Two From Norwich

The Suffolk University Softball team swept a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader over Norwich University on Thursday afternoon. Freshman Delaney Sylvester (Worcester, Mass.) was 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI in the opener to lead Suffolk to a 4-0 victory, while the Rams put together a 14-hit attack in game two to win 10-2.

Game One: Suffolk 4 Norwich 0

Suffolk jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the home half of the first inning as sophomore Kristen Young (Windsor, Conn.) singled with one out before stealing second. After a fielder's choice, freshman Madison Eucalitto (Old Saybrook, Conn.) would come around to score with two outs when Sylvester doubled to left for the early one run lead.

Sylvester and senior Sarah Chasse (Salem, Mass.) would add RBI singles in the bottom of the fifth as Suffolk staked themselves to a 3-0 edge. In the sixth, Eucalitto would single home freshman Morgan Parmeter (Maynard, Mass.) who led the inning off with a base hit.

Chasse would deliver the complete game shutout on the mound to move to a 9-2 record on the year. Chasse would scatter nine hits through seven innings of work while striking out one hitter.

Senior Melissa Rome (Enfield, Conn.) was 3-for-4 in the setback for Norwich, while junior Taylor Morris (Haverhill, N.H.) added two hits in four at bats.

Game Two: Suffolk 10 Norwich 2

Norwich would jump out to a quick 2-0 lead in their first at bat to start the game. Junior Payton Warner (Harwich, Mass.) would lead the game off with a walk, before a double to left by freshman Sarah Perry ( New Bedford, Mass.) would give the Cadets a pair of runners in scoring position with one out. Rome would drive in the game's first run with a base hit through the left side before Morris reached on a fielder's choice later in the inning to score Perry.

Suffolk would score 10 unanswered runs to end the game in the sixth inning. They would score four times in the bottom of the second. Young and Eucalitto would have RBI singles in the inning as Suffolk also took advantage of a pair of base on balls.

Sylvester would lead off the third inning with her second home run of the season. Later in the inning, freshman Devlin Frost (Tewksbury, Mass.) tripled to bring home two more runs as freshman Elissa Mogauro (Pelham, N.H.) and sophomore Lindsay Pagano (Wyckoff, N.J.) came around to score.

Five players finished the game with multiple hits for Suffolk in game two. Young was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI. Eucalitto drove in two runs as she was 2-for4 as Sylvester added a run scored with two RBI going 2-for-4.  Pagano and Mogauro each collected two hits in game two as well.

Freshman Kathleen Slavin (Rocky Hill, Conn.) improved to 8-2 on the mound for Suffolk as she struck out seven hitters through six innings allowing two runs on four hits.

Rome finished game two 2-for-2 with an RBI as she combined to go 5-for-6 with an RBI in the doubleheader.

Norwich falls to 8-20 on the season and 6-14 in GNAC play on the year. They will be back in action on Saturday afternoon in their 2015 regular season finale as they host the University of Saint Joseph beginning at 1:00pm.

Suffolk moves to a league best 16-2 in-conference record with Thursday's sweep and a 22-6 overall mark on the year. They will be back on Friday afternoon when they travel to Emmanuel College for a GNAC doubleheader beginning at 6:30pm.
