Softball Sweeps JWU

The Suffolk University Softball team swept a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader from Johnson & Wales University with scores of 10-2 and 4-3.

Suffolk took game one 10-2 in a continuation game from last week. Senior Nicole Rosa (Wallingford, Conn.) was 2-for-3 with three RBI in the opener.

Suffolk jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first when junior Meredith Ball (Nahant, Mass.) led the inning off with a walk and would later come around to score on a passed ball.

Sophomore Kristen Young (Windsor, Conn.) would drive in a run in the second with an RBI base hit, before senior Sarah Chasse (Salem, Mass.) drove her in later with another base hit. Suffolk would tack on three more runs in the third as freshman Madison Eucalitto (Old Saybrook, Conn.) brought home freshman Devlin Frost (Tewksbury, Mass.) with an RBI groundout. Freshman Allison Loftus (Oak Park, Ill.) would come around to score on a passed ball later before a bases loaded walk to Chasse would make it a 7-0 game through three innings.

In game two, Suffolk would come away with a 4-3 walk off victory in nine innings to complete the sweep.

Both teams would trade runs in the first inning as the Wildcats got on the board quickly in the first.

Junior Cynthia Proby (Bremerton, Wash.) would lead the game off with a double to left before a bunt single by freshman Eileen Eads (Portmouth, R.I.) put runners on the corners with no outs. Junior Kristen Solari (Old Bridge, N.J.) would knock in the game's first run with a base hit to right to score Proby.

Suffolk would answer in the home half of the first as back to singles by Frost and Young started the game offensively for Suffolk. Eucalitto would then even things up with a sacrifice fly to right.

Both teams would be deadlocked at 1-1 through the next six innings of action forcing the game into extras.

An infield error would give Johnson & Wales a brief lead but Suffolk would answer in their following at bat as Rosa singled home Young to make it 2-2 through eight innings.

Johnson & Wales would again score in the following inning as sophomore K Alexis DeMoss (Beckley, W. Va.) scored on a passed ball.

In the bottom of the ninth, sophomore Lindsay Pagano (Wyckoff, N.J.) would single as freshman Ali Yamakaitis (Avenel, N.J.), the placed runner on second advanced to third. A single off the bat of freshman Elissa Mogauro (Pelham, N.H.) would then tie thing up at 3-3. After an intentional walk to Frost, Kristen Young would draw a bases load walk to force in the go-ahead an game winning run.

Both pitchers for each team went the distance on the mound.

Freshman Kathleen Slavin (Rocky Hill, Conn.) struck out five hitters through nine innings of work to earn the victory. She allowed just one earned run on seven hits to move to a 7-2 record on the year.

Freshman Jennifer Corona (Middle Island, N.Y.) allowed two earned runs over 8 1/3 while striking out four.

Johnson & Wales moves to an 11-11 overall record on the season and 10-6 mark in GNAC play.

Suffolk improves to 20-6 overall record on the season and a league-best 14-2 record in GNAC play.
