Rams Sweep Gators in Five Innings

The Suffolk University Softball team hosted the Pine Manor College Gators in a twin bill on Monday night. The Rams swept the Gators winning both games in five innings. Taking game one 21-0 and game two 9-1.

Game One: Suffolk 21, PMC 0

The Rams started off quick in the bottom of the first scoring six runs. Anna Grace Maggs (Schenectady, N.Y.) got the Rams going with a single to plate Kristen Young (Windsor, Conn.). With the bases loaded Lindsay Pagano (Wyckoff, N.J.) reached on a fielder's choice to get Erin McAndrews (Marblehead, Mass) across home plate for a 2-0 lead. Sara Middleton (Otis, Mass.) doubled to bring in two RBI and double the score. Emily Martel (East Hartland, Conn.) singled to bring in Middleton. Martel stole second base and then Nikki Cignarella (Norwood, Mass.) doubled to bring in the final RBI of the inning to put the Rams up 6-0.

Top of the second pitcher Kim Crucioli (North Andover, Mass.) struck out three of the four batters to make it a quick turnaround. Suffolk went on the offensive and brought in nine runs on the inning. Nicole Rosa (Wallingford, Conn.) got the Rams on the bags first with a single. McAndrews got a triple to bring home Rosa and put the Rams at a 7-0 advantage.  Maggs singled and plated McAndrews.  Maggs stole second then Meredith Ball (Nahant, Mass.) singled and advanced on the throw to bring in Maggs. Middleton singled and plated Ball for a 9-0 lead. With the bases loaded again Rosa singled and advanced on the throw to bring in two RBI to pad the score more for the Rams. McAndrews and Pagano brought in three combined RBI to end the inning with a 14-0 score.

Crucioli took the mound and struck out two of the three Gators for a fast three and out to get the Rams back on offense. Bases were loaded for a third time this inning when McAndrews stepped up to the plate and batted in another RBI. Maggs, Ball, and Middleton all singled to bring in an RBI each and put the Rams up 18-0. Nicole Isakson (Avon, Conn.) was walked with the bases loaded to bring home Maggs and round out the scoring for the third inning.

Top of the fourth Crucioli retired all three Gator batters. With two outs Ball singled to bring in Young for the Rams' final score of the night to put the game at 21-0. The Rams made a pitching change for the top of the fifth and put McAndrews on the mound. She allowed no hits to keep the Gators shut out.

McAndrews and Middleton both had four RBI on the afternoon and Maggs had two stolen bases. Crucioli had nine strikeouts and allowed only one hit.

Game Two: Suffolk 9, PMC 1

The Rams also took game two in five innings, but the Gators were first to get on the board. With two outs Chardonai Rose (Fairfield, Calif.) singled to bring in Maria Vaughan (Okinawa, Japan) for the Gators only score and RBI on the afternoon. Pine Manor defense held out strong in the bottom of the first keeping the Rams scoreless and having their only lead of the game.

The Rams scored the bulk of their runs at the bottom of the second. Ball got the Rams on the bags first with a triple. Pagano singled to bring in Ball to tie the game 1-1. Middleton stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and doubled to bring in three RBI and put the Rams ahead 4-1. Rosa singled and plated Young for a 5-1 lead. McAndrews got her second triple on the afternoon to tie the Suffolk season record of eight and bring in an RBI. Suffolk benefitted from a Gator error when Maggs reached first on a shortstop error to score McAndrews for a 7-1 advantage.

Both teams took a quick three and out for the third inning with no hits or runs allowed. McAndrews singled at the bottom of the fourth to bring home Young and put the Rams up 8-1. Rams defense went three and out to take the Gators in the bottom of the fifth when Young doubled and brought Middleton home to end the game at 9-1.

With the pair of wins the Rams improve to 12-20 overall. Pine Manor drops to 0-10 on the season.

The Rams are back in conference action on Wednesday traveling to Anna Maria for a twin bill starting at 3:30pm. Pine Manor will be hosting Mount Ida in nonconference play in a doubleheader on Tuesday starting at 3:00pm.
