Rams Shutout Mustangs

The Suffolk University Softball team picked up a pair of wins on Friday evening. The Rams traveled to Mount Ida for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference double header. Suffolk took game one 2-0 and game two 1-0.

Game One: Suffolk 2, Mount Ida 0

With the bags loaded and two outs freshman Lindsay Pagano (Wyckoff, N.J.) was walked to plate senior Erin McAndrews (Marblehead, Mass.) to put the Rams up 1-0 at the top of the first. Neither team was able to get a hit off from the bottom of the third to the top of the fifth when the Rams scored again to add an insurance run to hold off the Mustangs.

Once again the Rams loaded the bases when sophomore Meredith Ball (Nahant, Mass.) reached on a Mustang error to pull in an RBI to bring home Kristen Young (Windsor, Conn.) and give Suffolk a 2-0 lead.

At the bottom of the sixth the Mustangs were looking to strike back with no luck. With two outs Kirsten Guerrero (Fairfield, Conn.) doubled to get the Mustangs third hit on the afternoon.  Junior pitcher Sarah Chasse (Salem, Mass.) got Nickole Soto (Marlboro, Mass.) to fly out to first base.

Chasse earned her fifth win of the season and allowed only four hits on the afternoon. She had six strikeouts and out of the 99 pitches she threw 67 were strikes.

Game Two: Suffolk 1, Mount Ida 0

Pitching once again played a huge role in the Rams' second shutout of the afternoon. Both teams remained scoreless until the sixth inning when Pagano doubled to left center to score Anna Grace Maggs (Schenectady, N.Y.) after she singled to left field and then stole second base.

The Mustangs were looking to answer at the bottom of the sixth with two outs and the bases loaded when Guerrero reached on a Suffolk error. Freshman pitcher Kim Crucioli (North Andover, Mass.) put a stop to Mount Ida when she got Soto to pop up to second base to close out the inning.

Cruciolo matched Chasse's pitching with only four hits and no walks on the afternoon and having four strikeouts. She pitched 97 balls where 67 of them were strikes.

With these wins the Rams improve to 9-17 overall and 3-7 in GNAC play. The Mustangs drop to 5-15 overall and 4-8 in conference action.

The Rams are heading into day two of six straight days of games to take on Norwich University on Saturday at home in a GNAC doubleheader with the first game starting at 1:00pm. The Mustangs are back in action on Sunday taking on Simmons College in conference play with games at 12:00pm and 2:00pm.
