Rams Down Badgers

Rams Down Badgers

The Suffolk University Softball team hosted the Johnson State Badgers in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon. The Rams swept the Badgers and took the first game 5-2 and the second game of the doubleheader 5-4.

Game 1

Pitching played a huge part in the win for the Rams. Junior Sarah Chasse (Salem, Mass) opened the first inning by striking out Johnson State's first three batters. Chasse would play a huge defensive roll in the win having 12 strike outs on the afternoon.

Both teams were slow to start on offense in the first inning. The Badgers took the lead when freshman Sarah Voorhis (Nashua, N.H.) homered and brought in two RBI to put them up 2-0. These would be the only runs the Badgers brought in on game one.

At the bottom of the fourth the Rams would get on the score board. Freshman Anna Grace Maggs (Schenectady, N.Y.) would get the Rams started with a single. Freshman Lindsay Pagano (Wyckoff, N.Y.) would then single and advance to third base on a Badger error. Maggs would cross home plate for Rams. Senior Nikki Cignarella (Norwood, Mass.) would round out the inning with an RBI to get Pagano across home plate tying the game 2-2.

The Rams would thrive in the bottom of the fifth and bring in three runs. Chasse would sacrifice to get Young on third when Junior Nicole Rosa (Wallingford, Conn.) would double to bring Young home. Senior Erin McAndrews (Marblehead, Mass.) would take advantage of a Badger error and bring in an RBI to get Rosa across the plate. McAndrews would score the third run of the inning.

Voorhi would have a game high two RBI on her homer for the Badgers.

Game 2

Pitching would again prove to play a huge roll in game two for the Rams. Freshman Kim Crucioli (North Andover, Mass.) would have four strikeouts on the afternoon.

The Rams and Badgers were both played strong defense throughout the first four innings and would remain scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when the Rams got on the board. Cignarella would triple and bring Maggs and Pagaon home. Sophomore Meredith Ball (Nahant, Mass.) sacrifice and bring Cignarella across home plate to put the Rams up 3-0.

The Badgers would get their first run of the game at the top of the fifth when Sophomore Alex Bean (St. Albans, Vt.) would cross home off an RBI from sophomore Shannon Grier (Plainfield, Vt.).

Suffolk would score two more runs in the fifth when Pagano would double out to right field and bring in McAndrews and Rosa for two RBI.

The Badgers would make an attempt at a comeback at the top of the seventh. Freshman pinch hitter Amanda Coulombe (Milton, Vt.) would hit the Badgers second homerun of the afternoon and bring in two RBI to put the score at 5-3. Freshman Anna Bingham (Island Pond, Vt.) would cross home off an RBI from Voorhi making the score 5-4. The Rams would end the inning when McAndrews would throw to Pagano for the game's final out.

The wins for the Rams improve them to 4-8 while the Badgers drop to 0-10.

The Rams are back in action on Friday hosting St. Joseph's Connecticut in a double header at 3:00pm and 5:00pm in their first conference match-up of the season. St. Johnson will head to Bay Path on Friday for a doubleheader at 3:30pm and 5:30 pm.
