Men’s Indoor Track & Field Posts Top New England Marks at Scarlet & White Invite

BOSTON – Suffolk men's indoor track & field logged some of the best performances in New England Saturday when the Rams took their talents to Boston University's Bruce Lehane Scarlet & White Invite.

The day's highlighted featured Matyas Csiki-Fejer's performance in the 3000. The captain ran against some of the best in the country with competition from top NCAA Division I programs Stanford, Harvard, and many others featured in the 45-runner field. Suffolk's senior shined with a time of 8:12.57 to claim eighth in the talented event. His performance marks the seventh-best in NCAA Division III this season and sits second in New England behind Williams' Aidan Ryan, who broke the national record earlier this year.

Freshman Carter Nevulis had two standout showings. He posted a personal record in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.70, good for 14th in New England. In the triple jump, Nevulis broke the school record of 12.50. Jack Cattie joined Nevulis in the hurdles, while Edward Abouzeid competed in along Nevulis in the triple jump.

One additional Rams record fell on Saturday when Selvin Backert clocked a 1:58.76 in the 800. He finished 60th in the 75-runner field that also featured Kely Maloney.

Robert Solari participated in the 400, his main event, for the first time this season. The senior turned in a promising 51.06 a week away from the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championships, where he looks to defend his individual title.

Matthew Mitchell (7.64) and Jason Motta (7.85) rounded out the Rams' runners in the 60m dash.

Michael Balestra was the lone blue-and-gold thrower to participate Saturday. He logged a 14.42-meter throw in the weight throw to take 19th in the 29-performer field.

Suffolk will turn its attention to the GNAC Championships that are on tap for Sunday, Feb. 13 at Boston University's Track & Tennis Center. The Rams aim to defend their conference crown, which they claimed at the inaugural league championships in 2020.
