The Suffolk University Men's Tennis team took on the Johnson and Wales Wildcats in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) semifinals play on Thursday afternoon. The Rams took the 5-1 victory to advance to the championship match on Saturday.
The Rams had a 2-1 mark in doubles action.
Sophomore Calixto Romero and junior Mark Winkler (Caracas, Venezuela) started Suffolk off with their 8-3 doubles win in the first position. Senior Vassilli Stroganov (Heorsholm, Germany) and freshman Francesco Saia (Wakefield, Mass.) picked up the win 8-2 in the third doubles game on the afternoon.
Suffolk swept in singles action taking all three matches.
Winkler took the number two singles spot sweeping both games 6-3. Drew Reilly (Boston, Mass.) was the winner in the third singles contest taking the first set 6-2 and the second set 6-1. Aaron Lau (Hong Kong, China) rounded out the field with a victory by shutting out his opponent in both sets for a 6-0 score in the fourth singles game to get the Rams their 5-1 victory over the Wildcats.
The Rams will play Saturday at 6:00pm against Ramapo College as they look for their fifth GNAC Championship in six seasons.
