Men's Tennis Advance to GNAC Finals


The Suffolk University Men's Tennis team opened the 2012 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament with a 5-0 victory over the Johnson & Wales Wildcats on Thursday evening in the semifinal round. With the victory the Rams move to a 12-1 mark on the season and advance to the conference finals in hopes of capturing their fourth consecutive league crown.

The Rams took the first three doubles matches of the game while needing only two victories in singles play to clinch the match win.

Sophomore Drew Reilly (Boston, Mass.) was perfect on the evening as he and his doubles partner, sophomore Aaron Lau (Hong Kong, China) combined for an 8-0 victory in the third tandem match.

Reilly did not surrender a point to his competition on the evening as he went on to win in singles competition in consecutive 6-0 sets.

Senior Chris Staley (London, England) also earned multiple wins on the evening for the Rams. Staley and freshman Marc Winkler (Caracas, Venezuela) took the first doubles match with an 8-1 victory for their fifth win this season as a duo. Staley later went on to win in singles competition, 6-0, 6-1improving his record in singles play to 7-2 this season.

Seniors Harlan Strader (Marblehead, Mass.) and Albert Buruga (Bradenton, Fla.) won their team-best seventh doubles match of the year with an 8-2 victory to round out the Suffolk win.

The Rams will now face-off with Emerson College, who were 9-0 winners over Norwich University in the other semifinals matchup on Thursday. It has been the Lions who have stood in the way of Suffolk's previous three championships. The championship match will be played on Saturday evening at 6:30pm at the Winchester Indoor Tennis Center.
