BIDDEFORD, Maine – The Suffolk men's soccer team has been slotted to finish sixth in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Preseason Coaches' Poll, the league office announced Monday.
The Rams, who collected 46 points, were pegged to finish ahead of Wentworth (44), Curry (35), Nichols (29) and the University of New England (11).
Two points separate the project champion and runner-up. Four CCC head coaches believe that Endicott will wear the league title after grabbing a share of the regular-season title a year ago, while a quartet of coaches believe Gordon, who stalled the Gulls in last year's semifinals and went on to capture the CCC Tourney crown in 2021, will repeat as champions.
With that in mind, Endicott earned 90 pints to top the poll conducted by the league's 10 head coaches last week and the Fighting Scots found themselves in the second spot with 88 points.
Similar to the first two picks, the third and fourth slots were separated by a pair of points as well with both squads, Roger Williams and Salve Regina, each receiving one first place nod. The Hawks slid into third with 81 points, which put the Seahawks in fourth with 79 points.
Western New England rounded out the top five with just one more point than Suffolk, 47.
Bill Maddock guided Suffolk into the CCC era a year ago, where it went 8-9-1 overall and 4-5-0 against conference counterparts, good for a league post season berth.
A number of veterans are back in blue-and-gold to push Suffolk's squad even further in 2022. Brady Sorensen (5g, 3a), an All-CCC Second-Team honoree from last season, highlights the returning group that features Miguel Varela (5g, 4a), Erik Van Even (4g, 3a), upperclassmen Dai Podziewski (1g) and Trevor Murdock and netminder Xander Balog (1.99 GAA, .686 save %).
The first week of Suffolk's 2022 season is a hectic one with three games over five days with the first on the calendar on Thursday, Sept. 1 against Mitchell at the friendly confines of James A. Sartori Stadium at East Boston Memorial Park.
