CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Behind four first half goals, the MIT men's soccer team defeated Suffolk University, 6-0, in a non-conference matchup at Steinbrenner Stadium on Wednesday evening.
With the 6-0 victory, MIT (7-1-0) has registered shutouts in four consecutive games and in seven of eight games this season. The scoring drought for opponents is now up to 360:00 minutes, which is the longest stretch of the season for the Engineers. Prior to tonight, MIT held opponents scoreless for 313:36 straight minutes over the first four games of the year, before the streak was broken up by a Roger Williams University goal in the 44th minutes back on September 16.
Over the past four games, the Cardinal and Gray have outscored their opponents by a 21-0 margin and have notched a 35-3 differential in goals over the entire season.
Engineers senior forward Sean Bingham tallied a pair of goals and two assists for six points tonight, while classmate Austin Freel chipped in with a goal and two assists of his own. Senior John Kramer, junior Kareem Itani and freshman Binh Le accounted for the remainder of MIT's goal, all planting single markers in the win.
MIT started the scoring early as the Engineers notched three goals over the opening 13:53 of the contest. Bingham registered his ninth goal of the season, when Freel crossed the ball from the 35 yard line on the far side of the field. Bingham took the ball and drove past Suffolk 0-8-1) senior goalkeeper Nicholas Chamma who was far out of his box, for the first tally of the game.
Bingham added his tenth goal of the season and the Engineer's second goal of the game just 4:17 later, again on a cross from Freel. Bingham gathered the ball off a Rams turnover as the duo volleyed it back and forth until he was at the top of the crease. Freel sent one final short pass to Bingham's foot as he fired the ball into the top half of the net, extending their lead to 2-0.
The Cardinal and Gray grabbed their third goal of the night when Itani gained possession of the ball at the 20 yard line. Itani juked past a pair of Rams defenders and fired his shot into the top right corner of the net for the 3-0 lead.
Kramer notched his and the team's fourth goal when freshman Ben Kaplan sent a long thru pass from MIT's 35 yard line. Kramer received the ball on the other side of the field, drove down the sideline and finished his shot into the top left corner of the net, as the Engineers went into the break, up 4-0.
Much like the first half, MIT didn't wait long to score in the second stanza. Le received a cross from Bingham 1:38 into the stanza for his fourth goal of the season, while Bingham found Freel at the top of the box three minutes later for the Cardinal and Gray's final tally of the game at the 48:17 mark.
MIT senior goalkeeper Jake Amereno didn't register a save in net, but picked up his fifth shutout of the season and improved his record to 6-1-0. Chamma stopped nine shots for the Rams, but his record dropped to 0-5-1 on the campaign.
Suffolk travels to Anna Maria College Saturday for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) battle with kick off slated for 2:00 p.m.
