Southern Maine Stalls Men’s Hockey, 2-0

GORHAM, Maine – Southern Maine put away two early goals and they proved to be enough as Suffolk men's hockey could not make up the distance to fall 2-0 at the USM Ice Arena Saturday night.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 0, Southern Maine 2
RECORDS: Suffolk (2-3-0, 0-2-0 NEHC) | Southern Maine (1-2-1, 1-2-1 NEHC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Adam Papayoanou gave the Huskies the only goal they would need at 13:44 of the first period, while the teams were skating four aside. Mark Tomascheck did the heavy work bumping a Ram off the puck and hitting Papayanou with a pass in the slot area. He beat Michael Levine with a low shot inside the left post.

Just seconds after the Huskies got their player out of the penalty box to go on the power play, Cody Braga made it 2-0 slipping around a Suffolk defender and depositing a nifty backhander into the top of the net at 14:25. Tyler Mathieu picked up the assist on the play.

Paul Leger came up with multiple big saves on Mikhail Bryan in the third period to keep the Rams off the scoreboard and preserve the Huskies' 2-0 shutout.

NETMINDER NOTES

  • Levine turned aside 23 attempts in the setback, his first of the season.
  • Leger recorded 20 stops in the shutout.
