Men’s Hockey Shutouts Western New England, 5-0, Sweeps Series

BOSTON – For the first time in 2001 seasons, Suffolk men's hockey shutout Western New England, blanking the Golden Bears, 5-0, Saturday afternoon at Olympia Ice Center to sweep the regular season with their its conference counterparts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Suffolk struck first 11 minutes into the contest as the Rams capitalized on a powerplay opportunity with Sam Kent and Brian Brooks setting up freshman Matt Bucher for his third goal of the season.   

Joseph Mortillaro scored midway through the second stanza to give the Rams a 2-0 advantage and the visitors led by the same margin at the intermission. 

Nick Mosher, Mortillaro and Kent all found the back of the net in the third period to seal the win for Suffolk. 

KEEPING UP WITH THE KEEPERS

  • Michael Levine recorded 38 saves to improve to 3-2-0 on the year.
  • Kevin Gollmer turned aside 27 attempts. 

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Kent factored in three of Suffolk's goals as he scored once and dished out a pair of assists.
  • Mortilaro found the back of the net twice.
  • The Golden Bears outshot Suffolk, 38-32.
  • Suffolk held a 31-28 advantage in the faceoff circle. 

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk swept the regular season series with Wentworth for the first time since the taking down the Golden Bears in both meetings in the 2015-16 season.
  • The Rams put together their first shutout over the season and blanked an opponent for the first time since a 1-0 win at Franklin Pierce Feb. 14, 2017.
  • The shutout marks the first cleansheet over The Golden Bears since
  • Levine picked up his second collegiate shutout with a career-best 38-save effort.
  • Kent produced a career-high three points on one goal and two handouts.
  • Mortillaro had a career-high two points with his first collegiate multi-point game thanks to two scores.
  • Bucher notched a multi-point game with a pair of assists.
  • Brooks stretched his point streak to three straight games.

Suffolk is back in action after the Thanksgiving holiday where it will compete at SNHU's Manchester PAL/Stovepipe Tournament Nov. 25-26. The Rams open action Saturday versus UMass Dartmouth.
