Bryan Pushes Men’s Hockey to 2-2 Draw At Western New England

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – In a clash of two Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) squads, the Suffolk men's hockey team trailed 2-1 with less than one minute remaining in regulation. Mikhail Bryan put in the equalizing goal with just 15 seconds remaining to force overtime for the first time this season, but neither the Rams or Golden Bears scored in the extra minutes to end in a 2-2 tie at Olympia Ice Arena Thursday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Luke Miller
potted a short-handed goal early in the first to break open the scoring. WNE had an answer seven minutes later to lock the game at 1-all. 

The score held at 1-1 as the buzzer signaled the end of the first 20 minutes, but it would not stay that way for long out of the locker room. Just 2:37 into the second stanza, Tyler Hines lifted the Golden Bears to a 2-1 lead and the hosts held onto it for almost the rest of the way. 

Bryan and Suffolk had other things in mind as the sophomore put in his first goal of the season to equalize the game at 2-all and force the extra session. 

Suffolk was able to get two shots on target, one by Connor Parent and Shayne Bailey, respectively, over the extra five minutes, but neither found the back of the netting as the horn sounded an the team's split the two conference points. 

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Suffolk powered the Golden Bear's Kevin Gollmer's with 39 shots compared to WNE's 28 shots. 
  • The Rams held the advantage in face-offs, taking 42 of the games 75 paced by Justin Holliday's (11-19) and Danyil Medvedev's (11-21) 11 wins apiece. Jack Jenkins, meanwhile, went 8-for-11 inside the circle for Suffolk. 

KEEPING UP WITH THE KEEPERS

  • Michael Levine faced 28 shots, stopping 26 in the tying effort. 
  • Gollmer turned aside 37 of Suffolk's 39 attempts. 

NOTEABLES

  • Miller's first goal this season was in short-handed fashion, marking the first short-handed goal by a Ram since Justin Selep '16 did so in a 5-2 win at Nichols Jan. 16, 2016. 
  • Suffolk played in its first overtime game this season and its first since needing extra time in the ECAC Northeast First Round against Wentworth last season Feb. 28. 
  • The Rams and Golden Bears tied for just the second time in the team's series dating back to 1999-2000. Suffolk is now 17-13-2 against WNE and is unbeaten in the past five meetings.
