Third Period Goals Vault Hockey to 2-1 Victory over Wentworth

BOSTON – The Suffolk hockey team skated away with a 2-1 win over Wentworth at Walter Brown Arena Tuesday night, thanks to two timely third period goals. Freshmen Tommy Bishop and Justin Holliday turned things around, sparking the Rams to victory.

Suffolk (4-0-2, 3-0-2 ECAC Northeast) and Wentworth (3-3-1, 2-2-1 ECAC Northeast) both struggled to gain scoring chances through the first two periods. The Leopards edged the Rams, 22-21, in shots on goal, but each team only had a few good looks. Brandon Smolarek blocked all attempts sent his way and the Rams' defense turned away multiple other WIT opportunities.

The Rams broke the scoreless tie in the fifth minute of the final period. Jack Jenkins picked up a loose pick and sent a pass to Nick Mosher, who sent a pass from the goal line on the right side to the far corner of the crease. The pass slid past Wentworth's goalie, who was guarding the post ready for a shot, and directly to Bishop's blade. Bishop buried the goal before Matt Jenkins could adjust. Thirteen minutes later, Holliday converted a lengthy offensive run, giving Suffolk a 2-0 edge. Simon Leahy and Stanton Turner had a hand on the game-winner.

Facing a 6-on-5 to close out the contest, Wentworth converted with just 19 seconds left on the clock when Angus Johnston slipped the puck past Smolarek. The Rams held on to the 2-1 win, keeping its six-game unbeaten streak alive. In total, Suffolk outshot WIT, 35-31, while Smolarek earned his fourth win of the season after the 30-save effort.

Up next for the Rams in their three-game week is a non-conference contest against Stonehill at Emmons Horrigan O'Neil Memorial Rink. Game time is slated for 7:40 p.m.
