Hockey Skates to 5-5 Tie at SNHU


The Suffolk University Hockey team skated to a 5-5 tie with the Southern New Hampshire University Penmen on Tuesday evening.

Junior Charlie McGinnis (Hanover, Mass.) scored the game-tying goal with fifty-one seconds in regulation in the third period as the Rams nearly lost a three goal first period lead.

McGinnis finished the game with a goal and two assists as Suffolk moves to a 3-2-1 overall record on the season.The Penmen remain winless in two games on the year.

Suffolk jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first eleven minutes of the game.

Junior Wes Bonnell (Flenton, Del.) opened the scored four minutes into the game as he netted his third goal of the year converting on feeds by freshman Carmen Mastrangelo (Wellington, Fla.) and sophomore Tim Sprague (Plymouth, Mass.).

McGinnis would set up freshman David Lazaro (Canton, Mass.) at the 9:45 mark of the first period, and freshman Mike Cherpak (Enfield, Conn.) would convert on a power-play a minute and a half later for the three goal Suffolk edge. The goals were Lazaro's and Cherpak's fourth on the year.

Southern New Hampshire would get on the board at the 12:25 mark of the first period as Joe Nelson scored his first goal of the season with a feed from Trevor Nelson to make it a 3-1 Rams edge after one period of play.

The Penmen would score the next three goals of the contest with Steve Berry scoring the lone goal of the second period, before Southern New Hampshire took a 4-3 lead with six minutes remaining in the game. Charles Wisniewski would score halfway through the third period, and Jim Garbione gave the home team their first lead of the game at the 13:49 mark in the third.

Suffolk would answer with Sprague netting his team leading fifth goal of the season on a Suffolk power-play at 15:48 of the third with McGinnis collecting his second assist of the game.

Jim Gabrione scored the Penmen fifth goal of the contest seventy seconds later as Casey Goll set him up for his second tally of the season.

McGinnis scored his first goal after the year to even the game as he took feeds from Lazaro and freshman Steve Colomey.

Neither team could score in the extra five minute overtime period as they each registered just one shot in the frame. Suffolk held an overall advantage in shots with a 31-26 edge.

Gabrione finished the game with two goals and assist for the Penmen.

Freshman Brandon Smolarek (Chesterfield, Mo.) made 21 saves in his first start of the season for the Rams in goal.

Suffolk will be back in action this weekend with games against Colby College on Saturday and Bowdoin College on Sunday.
