Men’s Golf Plays for NEIGA Championships this Weekend


BOSTON – Suffolk men's golf heads to Brewster, Massachusetts, this weekend to compete on the Captains Golf Course for the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Championship. Action commences Sunday, Oct. 17 and runs through Monday, Oct. 18. The Rams have a 9:15 a.m. day one tee time.

SUFFOLK ATHLETICS 2021-22 FAN POLICY
Suffolk University Athletics, following guidance from the University's health and safety protocols, Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC), Centers for Disease Control and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, plans to allow fans to attend home athletic contests during the 2021-22 academic and athletic year.

Fans, whether vaccinated or unvaccinated, can attend games. They must be masked the entire time they are on campus, pursuant to institutional policy, and complete a health screening form at the security desk of each building upon arrival. This policy applies to home contests played on campus at the Ridgeway Building's Larry E. and Michael S. Smith Court, as well as the Emmons Horrigan O'Neil Memorial Rink and the Louis E. Porrazzo Memorial Skating Rink.

For outdoor outings, specifically at East Boston Memorial Park, fans are asked to respect COVID safety protocols. At this time, masks will not be mandated for fans no matter vaccinated status at outdoor venues.

LAST TIME OUT
Suffolk men's golf put together a seventh-place showing at the Blazers Invitational at the Cold Springs Country Club over the weekend.

ABOUT THE NEIGA
The New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) is a non-profit organization, which was first organized in 1934 at the Oakley Country Club in Watertown, Massachusetts. NEIGA is believed to be the largest gathering of collective players from all levels of NCAA competing at the same location on a 36-hole layout. There are currently 46 New England colleges and universities as members of the NEIGA.

THE COURSE
Two championship golf courses at one location line in the Captains Golf Course. Together, the par-72 Port Course and the par-72 Starboard Course deliver 36 holes.  

THE FIELD
Sixteen different schools including Suffolk will battle to hoist the NEIGA trophy. The field features the Rams' Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) counterparts Endicott, Nichols, Roger Williams, the University of New England, Wentworth and Western New England. Rounding out the competition is Babson, Eastern Connecticut State, Elms, Husson, Saint Joseph's (Maine), Springfield, Southern Maine and Worcester State. 

RAPID REWIND
Two years ago, Suffolk had the best team showing at the 85th NEIGA Championship with a sixth-place showing in the field of 16. 

That same season, Owen Boggini put together the best-known individual performance in recent history and according to the Rams' year-by-year record book, which date through the 2008 season, with a tie for 12th. His two-day score of 156 boosted him to All-NEIGA Second-Team honors, the first male Suffolk student-athlete to garner the regional accolade.

RAMS RECOGNITION
For the second time this season, Mauro Stanchieri of the Suffolk men's golf team picked up Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Rookie of the Week recognition after his showing at the Blazers Invitational, the league office announced Tuesday.

WHAT'S NEXT?
Suffolk's fall slate will conclude on the Cape this weekend. The Rams will be back in the spring of 2022. A full competition slate will be released following the New Year.
