BEVERLY, Mass. – Suffolk baseball locked up the third seed in the 2024 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Tournament, which starts tomorrow, Tuesday, May 7.
The Rams enter the six-team field as the third seed after compiling a program-best 9-5 league ledger and 24-15 overall record.
It is the first time Suffolk will compete in the CCC Tournament as the third seed after making back-to-back appearances as the sixth seed. The Rams have had to play their way into the tournament the last two seasons. Overall, the blue-and-gold is 2-6 when paying in the CCC Tournament, which includes a 2-0 undefeated mark as the home team.
Suffolk will host sixth-seed Wentworth (21-17, 4-10 CCC) Tuesday, May 7 at East Boston Memorial Park at 4:00 p.m.
The Rams swept the Leopards in the regular-season double feature April 20. Suffolk captured game one, 12-2, in seven innings before securing the sweep with a 7-3 nightcap win.
Suffolk and WIT are prepared to tangle in the CCC postseason for the first time. Overall, the Rams command the all-time series with the Leopards, 19-14, including a three-game win streak in the all-time series. The foes will battle in the postseason for the second time, first since the 2011 ECAC Tournament, May 11, 2011. Suffolk captured that outing, 7-2.
Win or lose, Suffolk and Wentworth will take their talents to Bristol, Rhode Island, Thursday, May 7 to continue to the CCC Tournament. The winner will face second seed Roger Williams Thursday, May 9 at 10:00 a.m., with the loser awaiting the decision of the contest against the Hawks.
On the other side of the bracket, No. 4 Nichols hosts No. 5 Western New England Tuesday afternoon, with top-seeded Endicott scheduled to host action on Thursday, May 9.
The tournament will be played through Saturday with the final team standing set to be crowned the 2024 CCC Baseball Tournament Champion and earn the conference's automatic qualifier into the 2024 NCAA Division III Baseball Championship.
Suffolk makes its fourth trip and fourth in as many years to the CCC postseason. The blue-and-gold looks to hoist a conference crown for the first time since 2018 when it grabbed its fourth straight, eighth overall Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) title. Half of Suffolk's conference titles have come under Anthony Del Prete's tenure with four of the program's eight NCAA Tournament Trips also coming with Del Prete on the brench.
