Walrod Shoves his Way to GNAC Pitcher of the Week

BOSTON – Worth Walrod of the Suffolk baseball team tossed 9.0 scoreless innings last weekend to earn his place as GNAC Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced Monday afternoon.

Walrod, a southpaw from Dedham, Massachusetts, made two appearances in the Rams' five-game week in which he put together a no-run, six-hit, two-walk, 11-strikeout performance on the hill.

He first saw action in a staff-day against Western New England March 27. Walrod was the standout of 10 arms to take the hill in the 6-5 win against the Golden Bears March 27, Suffolk's first victory over WNE in the Anthony Del Prete and since 2009. He tossed 2.0 scoreless frames, giving up no hits or walks and fanning three batters.

Three days later, he earned his second win of the year, an 11-0 decision over Albertus Magnus in the GNAC opener, behind a complete-game, 7.0-inning effort in which he limited the Falcons to just six hits and two walks with eight punchouts, which tied a season-best for the senior.

The weekly accolade is the first for Walrod this season and third of his career as he was named the best hurler over a seven-day stretch by the league twice in 2016. He is the second Suffolk student-athlete to be recognized by the conference this season as fellow staff member Steven Rossi took home rookie of the week status after his collegiate debut on the rubber, March 13.

Walrod and Suffolk are back in action Wednesday, April 3 when they step out of league play with a midweek trip to Endicott on the schedule. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. at North Field in Beverly, Massachusetts.
