BOSTON – The four-time defending GNAC Champion Suffolk baseball begins its title defense this weekend when it welcomes Norwich to East Boston Memorial Park Sunday, March 24. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT
Suffolk baseball came out of a three-run slowly before a four-run seventh inning, which included a three-run dinger from Tim Brigham, and finesse relief pitching from Worth Walrod anchored the Rams to a 7-3 victory over Brandeis at Stein Diamond Thursday afternoon.

GNAC GATES

  • Since joining the GNAC ranks in 2000, Suffolk is 17-2 all-time in its first conference contest of the season.
  • In the Anthony Del Prete era, the Rams are unbeaten (4-0) in its league debut.
  • Suffolk is 2-0 all-time against Norwich when meeting the Cadets in its conference opener.
  • The blue-and-gold and Norwich will meet in the Rams first league outing of the season for the third time overall and first since 2017, a 4-3 win.

RAMS RUNDOWN
Suffolk returned to the win column Thursday afternoon with a 7-3 victory at Brandeis to move to 6-7-1 on the season. 

Sophomore centerfielder Will Hopkins and junior designated hitter Tim Brigham anchor the Rams at the plate. Hopkins' .410 average has produced 16 hits and six RBI to go with 11 runs scored and a team-high five stolen bases. Brigham, who is hitting .352, boasts team highs in hits (19) and RBI (13). Rich Gilbride's is also a consistent contributor at the dish with 14 hits, 11 RBI, 10 walks and a squad-best 13 runs scored.

Suffolk's staff has combined for a 4.71 ERA. Michael Muscarella and Parker Browne led the way on the hill with a 0.73 ERA and 2.53 ERA, respectively. Charles Batchelder (11.2 IP, 9K) and Steven Rossi (12.2 IP, 15K) are the next starters in the Rams' rotation.

CADETS CATCHUP
Norwich went 2-8 on its Spring Break trip to Florida. The Cadets will open its northern schedule this weekend at Suffolk where they look to snap a six-game skid. 

As a team, Norwich is hitting .247 and is led by senior outfielder Kevin Lynch at the plate. Lynch is hitting .393 and is the lone Cadet with double digit hits (11), for seven RBI and leads the team in runs (8) and stolen bases (8). Brady Doherty, Koby Foster and Brendon Profita have each produced three hits. Profita has matched Lynch's RBI with seven of his own, while Foster is a threat on the bags with four stolen bases.

The Cadets staff has put together a combined ERA of 7.77. Tanner Raymond has seen the most action on the mount. In three starts and 14.0 innings, the freshman has put together a 6.43 ERA with six Ks. Jake Ryan is also a go-to for Norwich with three starts and 10.1 frames of experience in his senior season. Ryan owns an ERA of 9.68 and has fanned six hitters. CJ Davis is also a consistent in the rotation with 8.0 innings scattered around six appearances. He holds a staff-best 5.63 ERA with six strikeouts to his credit.

INSIDE THE SERIES

  • Since Anthony Del Prete has taken over the program, Suffolk has yet to fall to Norwich, winning the last eight meetings.
  • Overall, the Rams hold a 38-1 all-time series lead over the Cadets.
