Baseball Holds Off JWU, 4-2, in Nightcap to Take Series

EAST BOSTON – The Suffolk baseball team held onto a four-run first-inning lead and kept Johnson & Wales from a late comeback to secure a 4-2 win in the nightcap to sweep the GNAC doubleheader at East Boston Memorial Park Saturday night afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Brady Chant started Suffolk off as the senior centerfield led off the game with a single, stole second and advanced to third on a sac bunt by Trevor LeeSeth Coiley's one-hopper to shortstop brought in his classmate before back-to-back doubles byWill Hopkins and Blasé Cormier scored three runs to give the Rams a 4-0 lead. Coiley came in on Hopkins hit with Greg Speliotis, who singled, and Hopkins crossing home on Cormier's knock.  

The score stood at a standstill from there until the Wildcats trimmed the margin in half in the top of the fifth. JWU got its offense going with two outs as VinAmalfitano singled to center field and an error by Mark Fusco kept the inning alive. A passed by the Rams' backstop moved the runners into scoring position and Colby Greenhalgh's single to right field scored the pair of runs.  

Kevin Sinatra came in to seal up the win for the blue-and-gold. The southpaw served two innings of scoreless relief to secure the two-run conference victory.  

PITCHERS PICTURE

  • Fusco faced 21 batters through 5.0 innings. The starter who improved to 3-2 on the year, allowed two runs on four hits and fanned six hitters. 
  • Sinatra earned the save with a no-hit, three-strikeout relief effort in 2.0 innings of work. 
  • James Smiegocki (2-3) took the loss after allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits and six walks, while sitting down five batters.  

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Six different batters combined for Suffolk's six hits. 
  • Cormier had the most successful day at the dish with ahis double bringing in a pair of runners. 
  • Hopkins rocked a double for one RBI and scored one run himself. 
  • Coiley's one hit scored one run and the senior outfield scored one himself. 
  • Chant, who stole two bases, had one hit and one run scored.  

NOTEWORTHY

  • Suffolk swept Johnson & Wales for the first time since 2016. 
  • The Rams won their fifth consecutive contests against the Wildcats to improve to 37-17 all-time versus JWU. 
  • Suffolk opened conference competition 5-0 for the second straight season. 
  • Speliotis is on a nine-game hit streak. Over the stretch, he has recorded nine hits, three for extra bases, and has brought in five runs.
