Western New England Outlasts Baseball, 4-1 in Game 1

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Suffolk baseball's early edge would not be enough as Western New England used two-run innings and pitching to take down the Rams, 4-1, Saturday afternoon at Trelease Park.

THE BASICS
SCORE: Suffolk 1, Western New England 4
RECORDS: Suffolk (4-11) | Western New England (10-4)

HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless first frame, Seth Coileyopened the second with a deep double to left center and advanced to third thanks to a passed ball. Rich Giandrea  brought the runner in with a sac fly to give a Ram a 1-0 edge.

Kevin Sinatraretired the side in the home half of the second, but found himself in a bases loaded jam behind back-to-back Suffolk errors followed by a hit-by-pitch. The Golden Bears' designated hitter Neil Velazquez made contact, but the blue-and-gold successfully made the forced out at home to keep the hosts of the scoreboard. The same cannot be said a batter, however, as a two-RBI single by Alex Loparco flipped the switch and put WNE ahead, 2-1. Suffolk successfully turned a 453 double play to get out of the inning down one.

Suffolk continued to look for a comeback, but the Golden Bears stretched its lead to 4-1 behind a two-run sixth inning to grab a three-run cushion.

With their backs against the wall and just one inning to make up the ground Suffolk was sat down in order in the top of the seventh to seal their setback fate.
