Rams Drop to Gulls 8-6

The Suffolk University Baseball team took on the Endicott College Gulls in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon. The Rams took their first loss in ten games to the Gulls 8-6.

Endicott was the first to get on the board at the bottom of the first inning. Mike Kochiss (Fairfield, Conn.) doubled to left center to bring in the first run of the afternoon for the Gulls. Senior Tad Gold (Martha's Vineyard, Mass.) stepped up to the plate to single to center field and score Kochiss for a 2-0 lead.  Matthew Paola (Midleburry, Conn.) would round out the inning with a double to left center to get Gold across home plate to make it 3-0.

The Gulls pitcher, Davarn Nova (Wareham, Mass.) took the Rams for a quick three and out at the top of the second striking out all three batters.

The Rams' defense retaliated allowing only one hit at the bottom of the second and allowing no hits in the third.

Endicott took advantage of a Suffolk error at the bottom of the fourth to drive in another run. Brett Holmgren (Middleboro, Mass.) scored on a throwing error by the first baseman to put the Gulls at a 4-0 lead.

Suffolk answered at the top of the fifth when senior Mac Jacobson (Norfolk, Mass.) singled to right center to bring Rob Marks (Revere, Mass.) home on an unearned run after an Endicott fielding error from the third baseman.

At the bottom of the fifth Steve Morganelli (Milford, Mass.) doubled to bring in two RBI for a 6-1 lead.

The Rams were looking to close the gap when senior Jake Cintolo (Wrentham, Mass.) stepped up to the plate and homered to left field for a 6-2 score at the top of the seventh. The Gulls answered when Gold scored on a wild pitch to close out the seventh with a 7-2 lead.

The Rams kicked it into high gear at the top of the eighth scoring four runs.  With the bases loaded Matthew Brenner (Eliot, Me.) was walked to score JC Collette (Amesbury, Mass.).  Jacobson stepped up to the plate and doubled to bring in three RBI for a game high total of four on the afternoon.  This put the Rams with just a one run deficit 7-6.

Endicott put the game out of reach for Suffolk at the bottom of the eighth scoring their last run of the afternoon when Gold singled to right field to bring Harry Oringer (Dartmouth, Mass.) home putting the score a 8-6. The Gulls held the Rams scoreless at the top of the ninth.

This loss put the Rams at 13-8-1 overall. The Gulls improve to 16-4 overall.

The Rams are back in conference action on Saturday taking on Norwich University in a doubleheader at 1:00pm and 3:30pm. The Gulls will travel to Salem State on Thursday for 3:30pm start time.
