Cunningham's Monster Night Propels Baseball to Sweep

Senior Mike Cunningham (Syosset, N.Y.) was 7-for-8 combined in a two-game sweep over the Albertus Magnus College Falcons on a chilly Monday evening as Suffolk took both ends of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader. Sophomore Adam Johnson (Georgetown, Mass.) had a walk-off game winning single in the opener for a 9-8 victory, while sophomore JC Collette (Amesbury, Mass.) had a pinch-hit two run single in the sixth to lift Suffolk to a 6-4 win in game number two.

Game One

Cunningham opened his seven hit evening in the first inning of game one as he crushed his league leading eighth home run, a three run bomb into the trees in centerfield to put Suffolk up early 3-0.

The Falcons would answer with six runs of their own in the second inning as they took advantage of three base on balls, including two with the bases loaded to take a 6-4 edge early.

Freshman Jordan Kubilus (Cheshire, Conn.) opened the second inning for the Falcons with a single, that was followed up by a base hit through the left side of the infield by freshman Justin Poirier (Meriden, Conn.). Freshman Sage Leonard (Northford, Conn.) would draw the first walk of the inning, before sophomore Nick Sedia (Bronx, N.Y.) was issued the next free pass to bring in the first Albertus run of the night. An infield error and another base hit off the bat of junior Zak Sokolis (Meriden, Conn.) would keep the inning alive before sophomore Anthony Pellegrino (Branford, Conn.) evened the game with his second walk in as many bats. Sophomore Shane Osborn (Lake Worth, Fla.) capped off the scoring inning as his single to right brought in two more runs as Albertus put six on the board in the second.

The Falcons would tack on a pair of runs in the fifth inning as Leonard picked up an RBI single, before Sedia pushed home another run with an RBI groundout as Albertus spread their lead to 8-4.

Junior Mike Muse (Milton, Mass.) would drive in Cunningham in the fifth inning with a base hit, before freshman Jon LaPolla (Providence, R.I.) would hit a double to right center bringing in one more run as Suffolk pulled within two runs, 8-6.

Junior Devan Jones (Roslindale, Mass.) led the seventh off with a hit by pitch before Cunningham's second double of the game brought the tying run into scoring position for Suffolk. A hit by pitch to Stanley would load the bases before Muse collected his third RBI of game one with his fourth single in the contest to bring Suffolk within one. Junior James McConville (Medford, Mass.) evened the game with an RBI groundout to short. LaPolla was then intentionally walked to load the bases and set up the force. Johnson plated Stanley for the game winning run with a single into left field to end things.

Sophomore Jake Rosner (Fairfield, Conn.) earned the win as he threw five innings of relief striking out three while not allowing an earned run.

Suffolk collected 17 hits in the opener including four by both Muse and Cunningham.

Game Two

JC Collette hit a 3-0 fastball down the left field line to plate juniors Mac Jacobson (Norfolk, Mass.) and Jake Cintolo (Wrentham, Mass.) for the go-ahead runs as Suffolk improves to 24-8 on the year and rounds out GNAC play with the number three seed heading into this weekend's tournament as they finished with a 12-4 mark.

Cunningham rounded out game two going 3-for-4 with an RBI triple in the first inning, while Cintolo was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and a pair of RBI. Cintolo plated a pair of runs in the second inning as he tripled to deep right field following an RBI single by Jacobson.

Sophomore Dan Shields (Haverhill, Mass.) picked up the win on the mound to move to 2-1 despite a blown save.

Shields allowed a pair of runs in the sixth inning as Suffolk took a 4-2 lead heading into the frame. Junior Patrick Dornfied (Berlin, Conn.) doubled home freshman Arber Mehmedi (Naugatuck, Conn.) before a groundout by Zak Sokolis evened things up.

Senior Chris Campbell was solid for Suffolk as he started the game on the mound. Campbell struck out four in five innings of work before departing with the two run lead.

Sedia finished game two with a pair of his for Albertus including an RBI, while sophomore Shane Osborn drew three walks in the game.

The losses drop Albertus to a 12-17 overall mark on the year. They head into the GNAC Tournament as the number five seed with a 7-9 record.
