The Suffolk University Baseball team swept a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader over the Emerson College Lions on Saturday afternoon. The Suffolk pitching staff combined for 22 strikeouts on the day in the two games combined as they won game one, 14-0 and then took the nightcap 4-2 in 10 innings.
Game One
Junior Jonathan Richard (North Reading, Mass.) improved to 4-0 on the mound for Suffolk as he and senior Chris Campbell (Orchard Park, N.Y.) combined a five hit shutout in the opener.
Suffolk scored 14 runs on 13 hits in game one highlighted by a 2-for-3 performance by junior Mac Jacobson (Norfolk, Mass.), who also scored three runs in the contest.
Suffolk scored four times in the first as Jacobson knocked in the first run of the ballgame with a single up the middle to play junior Devan Jones (Roslindale, Mass.), who started the game off with a triple off the centerfield wall.
Junior Jake Cintolo (Wrentham, Mass.) would add a bases clearing double in the fifth inning as part of a six-run scoring spree for the Rams, while junior James McConville (Medford, Mass.) was 2-for-4 in the opener with a pair of runs scored and a pair of RBI.
Freshman Rob Marks (Revere, Mass.) collected his first career RBI in the seventh with a pinch-hit single.
Richard cruised through six innings of work, while scattering five hits. He struck out a pair while issuing no walks. Campbell pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh as he struck out two Lions' hitters.
Game Two
Junior Frank Tierney (Hyde Park, Mass.) and sophomore Cal Carroll (Methuen, Mass.) combined for 7 2/3 scoreless innings of relief while the duo combined for 15 punchouts in game two as Suffolk snuck away with a 4-2 victory in 10 innings.
Trailing 2-1 in the top half of the seventh, junior Mike Muse (Milton, Mass.) singled up the middle to plate the tying run, senior Chris Stanley (Placentia, Calif.) who doubled to start off the rally.
Junior Nick Kelly (McLean, Va.) would throw nine innings of six hit ball for the Lions as he struck out seven.
After Suffolk got on the board in the second inning with a 1-0 lead on an infield error by the Lions, Kelly would escape a bases loaded jam and would retire 15 hitters in a row before Stanley's double in the seventh.
Emerson scored both their runs in the second inning as senior Kolby Woodfield (West Hartford, Conn.) singled to left to drive in freshman Jesse Francese (Sharon, Mass.). Later in the inning junior Jesse Sullivan (Medfield, Mass.) would draw a bases loaded walk to give the Lions a 2-1 lead they would hold on to for the majority of the game.
Emerson would threaten once again in the third as they were able to load the bases with one out as Carroll was summoned in from the Suffolk bullpen. He once again worked his way out of trouble for the Rams as he recorded a strikeout and flyout to hold Emerson scoreless in the third.
Carroll would throw 3 1/3 innings of shutout relief only allowing one hit while striking out five.
He gave way to Tierney in the top of the sixth with two outs and a runner in scoring position. Tierney moves to 2-0 on the year for Suffolk as he pitched 4 1/3 innings striking out 10 hitters.
Suffolk scored the go-ahead runs in the top half of the tenth inning as Jones singled off Emerson junior reliever Andy Brightman (North Wales, Pa.). Two consecutive passed balls would send Jones to third with nobody out as Jacobson drew a walk to reach base for the seventh time on the day. Cintolo would knock in the game winning run with a groundout to short before Stanley gave Suffolk some insurance with his fourth hit of game two.
Tierney finished off the game striking out the side as Suffolk improves to 13-2 on the year.
The losses drop Emerson to 0-14 to start the year.
Both teams will be back on the diamond on Tuesday afternoon.
Emerson will travel to Mass. Maritime Academy at 3:30pm.
Suffolk will be back in action on Tuesday afternoon as they travel to Western New England University for a 3:30pm non-conference game with the Golden Bears.
