Ridgeway Building

The Home of Suffolk Athletics

Facility Information:

Suffolk’s Ridgeway Building opened on Feb. 5, 1991. While the building houses the state-of-the-art Michael and Larry Smith Fitness Center and the home court for the Rams’ men’s and women’s basketball team and the women’s volleyball team, it services the entire intercollegiate program – it is a centrally-located home for the department’s administration, and also houses a newly-revamped strength and condition facility for its varsity athletes.

The showpiece of the Ridgeway Building is the Michael & Larry Smith Fitness Center. The 5,800-square-foot facility opened its doors in August 2016 and has been the center for Suffolk’s active community. Varsity athletes, meanwhile, can workout in the exclusive Varsity Weight Room

The building also houses Larry E. and Michael S. Smith Court, giving Suffolk’s men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball program a home. Suffolk’s lone-on campus athletic facility, the gym, which sits in the basement of the Ridgeway Building, is located 30 feet below ground, giving a unique environment for collegiate basketball games and volleyball matches. The court’s up close and tight setting allows for fans and spectators to be right on top of the action. Spectators can view the action in the bleachers situation at court level or up above on the lower mezzanine level, which overlooks the court from the balcony.

Administrator and coaches offices line the third floor, while the students can lounge on the second level. Teams also now have a place to watch film or host meetings in the state-of-the-art team room, which was included in a facelift over the summer of 2019 through the leadership philanthrophy of Michael S. Smith '61 and Larry E. Smith '65.
