BOSTON – In the most popular Ram of the Week Twitter Poll this season, with over 200 votes cast, the results were back-and-forth and sparked heated debates between Ram Nation, but ultimately a clear victor was chosen.
AND THE WINNER IS …
Matyas Csiki-Fejer of Suffolk men's cross country edged out men's soccer's Erik Van Even for Ram of the Week honors for Sept. 13-19. Van Even jumped ahead early on, but a late push by Ram's runner supporters pushed Csiki-Fejer in front for good.
Csiki-Fejer collected 50 percent of the 214 votes cast to earn the honor for the first time in his career after begin nominated multiple times. This week alone marked his second consideration for the 2021 cross country season for Ram of the Week, which is presented every Monday to one Suffolk student-athlete from competing teams for their performance over a seven-day stretch.
The senior from Manchester, Missouri, outshined his 255 foes on the Coach Robert Dowd Cross Country at the Robert 'Buddy' Harris UMass Dartmouth Invitational with a school-record 5-mile time of 23:36.3. He topped the field that featured runners from 33 institutions that represented every NCAA Division including DI rivals UMass Lowell and Holy Cross. His final time is not only a program record, but was 1:44 faster than his performance personal-best, which he set at the same event in 2019.
The accolade is added to a long list of awards for Csiki-Fejer, who has rewritten the Rams' record books throughout his Suffolk career. This season he has led Suffolk to its first-ever regional ranking in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association poll. The Rams were selected eighth in the week one of the weekly poll.
